See or Do in Savannah region
I will be in Savannah, GA July 23-24, 2009 waiting to join a family vacation. Does anyone have suggestions what to see or do re: Civil War battlefields, museums, Porsche, or racing those couple of days? If I get to Jacksonville, FL, will Brumos let me see their museum?? I will have a car so can travel. Please reply to jcalzia@usgs.gov. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The city of Savannah itself is a great place to visit.. Some of the squares and Antebellum Mansions are stunning...The river walk on the Savannah river is nice.... lots of good restuarants.
Roebling Road is about 25 minutes from downtown Savannah. I love getting down there for the club race and a weekend in Savannah, one of my favorite track destinations...

+1 on the 8th air force museum - pretty cool stuff. Also, run over the Talmadge bridge into South Carolina and run over to Beaufort, SC (about 45 minutes). Lots of cool old pre-civil war plantation era homes on The Point over looking the intercoastal waterway (where The Big Chill was filmed). I used to live there and it is a cool litlle historical town to spend an afternoon in.

Fort Pulaski is on the way to Tybee Island...Great Civil War history.
Wormsloe(sp??) Plantation is another beautiful place to visit. Spend time downtown and around Market street. Great seafood restaurants all over the city...If it is still open, the North Beach Grill on Tybee Island is a wonderful place to eat right on the beach. have fun, Ben

Historic District. Great old homes and town squares. Mercer House ("Midnight in the Garden..."site). Early American town planning by Oglethorpe, who also laid out Charleston.

Just went there.... Man was it HOT!!! People dropping like flies from heatstroke, all around us. The city itself is very nice, The Pink house (I think) was a great restaurant (a very old house turned into a restaurant, looks it, feels it, different)... Riverwalk is nice, but skip the boat tour, the banks of that river are fugly beyond belief (dump, factory, dump, nothing)
The city tour was worthwhile though, would have missed out on a lot had I not done it... My only piece of advice, watch the sweet tea... Georgia sweet tea is made of 80% sugar and 20% liquid... It'll kill you ! ;-) |

That's why you have to order 1/2 sweet and 1/2 unsweet

If your a Civil War buff, Ft. Pulaski is a hit. It was the first fort to be hit by rifle cannon fire and that battle made the older brick fortresses obsolete from then on. The fort is well preserved and takes several tours to tour. Its on a beautiful marsh location heading out to Tybee Island. You cannot miss it.
After the fort, turn east (left) toward Tybee Island and look for the signs on the right for the CRABSHACK. Its on the marsh as well and started as an old fish camp that spread out to a large seafood joint. It probably has the best of the low country seafood (shrimp, crabs, crawfish, etc) and its as casual as it gets......great place............ Everyone who comes to Savannah for a visit, heads down Bay Street and down to River Street. Its all commercial, but the shops are in the old cotton warehouse buildings and the place has a great historic touch to it. From oysters to t-shirts, you can find it all. If you head away from Bay Street, take a driving tour of the histroic district. General Ogelthorpe planned the town on "squares" and the parks, historic homes and neighborhoods are beautiful. If you really want to check it out, bus tours are available. Two days are'nt enough to see it all, but if I had to prioritize it, it be the Fort, the historic district, River and Bay Streets and a look-see at Tybee Island. Definitely watch the tea.................get it unsweetened and do your our sweetening! You'll go into sugar rush shock othewise! Your in the land of grits, hush-puppies, collard greens, okra, black-eyed peas, pork and seafood. Get in the local cuisine and have fun............... Caution.........................sand gnats will drive you insane this time of year!!!! Bob 73.5T Georgia |

I don't have anything to add about Savannah that has not already been said. There is also the house in Downtown where "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was filmed. I am pretty sure you can tour it but it was closed the last time I was there 10 years ago. jamie
