The other night when i was driving home I hit the breaks pretty hard and felt it pull to the left, I then did it again and notice that when I let go of the wheel it would spin hard to the left. The feeling was as if only one of the calipers were not gripping but im not really sure. the pads on the car are fairly new also. I was wondering if there was a way that I could inspect my brakes to see if the calipers are gripping. Any input on how to go about fixing the problem is appreciated. I have thought about just taking the car to my mechanic but i want to start working on my car myself thanks john |

Apparently, this seems to be a common problem from the many posts on this subject. I'll tell you my experience. My 85 INTERMITTENTLY pulled hard to the left whilst breaking, maybe 50% of the time. Same thing, let go of the wheel and it would turn to the left alot even at slow speeds. I checked my pads and they were about half to 3/4 worn-I still felt like I had enough pad left. Long story short, calipers seemed o.k. too so I figured it was swollen break hoses causing one of the calipers to not fully retract and thus contact sooner than the rest when I would hit the brakes. I brought the car in last week for some maintanance and told the guy to check the brakes and that I was probably ready for new brake lines. He called me back and said I needed new pads all around and the calipers needed excersizing. He said the lines were fine. He went on to say the pads wer NOT worn out BUT were worn eneough for the calipers to "cock" inward when I brake. I was skepticle but let him go to it. The damn brakes work awesome and there is no pull at all now. He did not charge me that much for the job, put on the factory pads, and excersized the calipers, also replaced all of the brake fluid-He said the fluid looked real bad so maybe that was part of the reason it pulled. I don't know. I am very happy with the brakes now and the dead-straight stoping- It cost me about $285.00 total for the job.

Well dont know if you did this at different times or not.. Ive been driving and found the same problem..sometimes right sometimes left. I found that on a perfect surface it didnt do it..so iplayed around and i found if there is any slight rut in the road depending on which tire is on the slope of it , it can change the way it goes.. maybe its aproblem but when there are some ruts in the road it can do it either way depending on how your lined with them. Just my .02~!

Before you rush out and spend $285 on a mechanic, bleed all 4 calipers (probably flush out all the old fluid at same time). If that does not work check for a seised piston in one of your brake calipers.

Corner weights, and caster can effect (affect?) braking like this too...
