four post lifts and fault lines

I can't afford a new house with a bigger garage because mine is under water so much. I'm stuck here indefinitely. So, been considering putting a 4 post lift in the garage innorder to park another Porsche. But, my place is 4 miles from a fault line. Never been in an earthquake and don't know the ratings of the lifts.

A for post lift, not such a good idea?

Gary

Good idea. I have one that I am using on a 930 restoration. My garage ceiling height is 10'-0" and with the car on the rack - I can run the top of the car into the ceiling. So I have to watch that, but with it extended (with clearance above) I can fit my 2010 M5 below the Porsche.

I don't drive the M5 in the winter - so I park it below the Porsche and my winter car sets in the other space where the 5 usually sits.

Heres at pic

Nice garage and car too. No Cornhusker posters.

Looks like one of the projects I did on my car when I lived in Iowa. Added an oil cooler and front valance. The lift would've made the project easier.

Another reason I'm considering a lift is I developed a fear of crawling under the car while on jack stands.

I've been spoiled since I have access to a lift at a shop. I couldn't imagine working on one of these cars without a lift, it makes things 1000% easier. As for fault lines, if your house starts shaking badly enough to knock over your lift you should be running for it and not worrying about your car. As long as it is anchored into a concrete pad of sufficient depth and reinforcement with bolts of adequate length you should not have much to worry about in even a moderately sever earthquake. I'd be more concerned about being under jack stands or a scissor if the ground started shaking.

No problem, I'll pour thick concrete pads.

Thanks,

Gary

Check with your lift manufacturer for the slab base. I thick 4-5 inches is enough - especially in Nevada. No drastic thaw/freeze issues. There is a room below my garage (pool house, bathroom, bar and storage area). We installed hollow core concrete pre-tension slabs (9" thick), a rubber liner barrier and poured 6" of concrete. This is a 3-1/2" car garage with 3 floor drains, A/C, heat, hot and cold water.

Definitely - a man cave.

I live in the Bay area. just got a 4 post, and I decided to bolt it down instead of leaving it floating around. Safe and sound. If there is a 9 point earthquake and the car falls off, well that is what I pay insurance for.

By the way, I don't think dropping a Porsche engine is possible with a 4 post lift but I have not tried.

I had a 4 post lift in my garage in Burlingame, CA (by SFO). I did a number of safety precautions,
bolted to the foundation at the 4 corners, 2 diagonal braces from the top of the 2 posts on the long side to the concrete stem wall, I also made plates that bolted to the inside of the rails at the tire locations so the car couldn't slide off to the side in case of a good shake.

We just had a mild 5... If you got a 9 (which would be 10,000 stronger) sadly calling you insurance will not be your priority.
