Wow, you don't see these very often
I wonder if you could have "special ordered" a stripped 911 like this without it being a "Club Sport" back in the day?
It's a shame these fantastic drivers are usually relegated to the dark corner of a garage where they get sort of arthritic from lack of use.... |

Craig, here in Denver, drives his CS...
Not the above car... |

That same car was listed for $69K just last month on craigslist. These '89 factory lightweights must really be the cat's meow--how can NADA's printing offices and website keep track of such stupendous rates of appreciation?

Craig's CS drives great (I was fortunate enough to drive it briefly). I've driven 3 of the 28 cars and Craig's was by far the best to drive.

Yes, but you wouldn't have the special motor that has lightened valvetrain with higher redline and blueprinted parts.

Or you could take your Carrera and build your own Club Sport for free....
Just take everything out that is not needed - which on a Carrera is just about every little doo dad that Porsche has stuck on the car for 30+ years.

I want to know where you get your engine blueprinted and your ECU chipped for FREE?
![]() I too have briefly sat behind the wheel of Craig's car. Though I can't say that I drove it any further than from the front parking lot to the back service bay. God did I want to take that car out and stretch it's legs. But that's not the professional thing to do without the owner's consent. I have a lot of respect for the fact that his car is driven the way it is meant to be.

And how much hp does all that = ? My engine is blueprinted and chipped - there....FREE. My guess is roughly the same difference. Do you have a definitive value of a CS 3.2 motor vs any other 3.2 in any other Carrera on a dyno to show bluprinting did anything? The rev limit on a CS is 6850rpm (up from 6520) - and lest we forget the sodium filled valves. ECU technology in 89 vs. 2010. I will take a Wong chip anyday. (Ok so I was wrong you need $350.) Although I am not sure how much that fender graphic goes for

I don't think anyone would argue that $80k for an original CS is great performance per dollar. It's obviously not going to appeal to anyone but a collector for that price. If that's not your interest, then so be it...

Most of the 'price' is the rarity of the car. You can't 'convert' that.
The special valves, blueprinting, lightening etc. are part of it. You can 'convert' that. It's a minor part of the mystique. |

'mystique' - say that ten times fast...and you get 'mistake' Coincidence?
"well I had $80k - now I have a Carrera with nothing inside and salt in my valves"

Different strokes for different folks I guess. To each their own.

![]() Having said that, I remember when the Club Sports came out and even looked at a new one at my local dealer. I thought it was the "right" thing to do - make the car more of a driver's car. Too bad Porsche charged a premium at the time to remove things from the car like A/C and the rear seats...

If you guys want to criticize the CS on the basis of its "value" per dollar (e.g., costs more for getting less comfort items, only minor power increase over stock Carrera, etc.), then you'll get the same answer for ANY collector car. You really can't judge a collector car by the same standards as a driven one. The fact is there is a market for these cars because they are both desirable and rare (two qualities required for any car to reach collector status) and his asking price is probably too high but not ridiculously so. For 99% of us, we wouldn't consider it, but for somebody who wants a special car and has the bucks, they should go for it.

A long time ago I was told by a wise man whom I trust that you should assume a seller's real price is 80% of their asking price and your first offer should be 75%. While that's not a scientific formula or anything, if you apply it here, that's a $65,000 car. I find that more realistic, especially in a flat recession bound market.

Getting $80k for a Club Sport in this economy is going to be tough and I'm not convinced CL is where it is going to generate interest. We are aware of low/no mile CS's going for $150k but not today and this car is not a low/no mile car although I have heard from someone that looked at it that it is very clean. I think Matt's $65 is much more realistic....time will tell.
Dave's (porschenut) value per dollar statement is accurate....for sure. It's hard for the avg Carrera owner to come close to justifing the price. I was fortunate enough to buy mine 10 years ago when the price differential of the CS and the regular Carrera was much less. Since there are only 28, when they come up they generally sell fairly quick. My 13 yr old will have her license in 3 yrs so I'm keeping my car with the hope she'll autocross it with me. When she turns 18 maybe she'll want to do DE's but it will not be in the CS

I have been thinking about the high price for this car. And have finally been able to make a realistic comparison. $80K for a CS...or...$40K for a near perfect RS America AND $40K for another RS America Track Car.
I remain unconvinced that a CS is worth $80K. Just my humble opinion.

For $80k, I'd rather have a 996 GT3 track car and a Cayman S daily driver but that's just me... Everyone will have their own equation and most won't choose a CS for value at $80k. But if you already own every 911RS or CS made and are missing the 88-89 Clubsport, the picture starts to look different.
