Robs 911ST Cafe' Racer
This project started with a very nice and original signal orange 71 T, which I have learned from past experience is the best starting point for this kind of project, I spent my budget improving car and not fixing rust holes on a worn out beater. I know some of you may think the car was to nice to modify, I agree.
The theme of the car was not to build a perfect replica of a factory ST,( no two were alike anyway) but something that could have been ordered from the factory by someone with “connections”, who was not a professional racer, but wanted a car he could use weekends at the track and during the week as a comfortable daily driver. The car is mostly all steel bodied including fenders and bumpers, which were cut and formed to the fenders, and slotted for the Carrera oil cooler. It has aluminum rear deck lid and a factory style balsa wood reinforced fiberglass hood. The original 2.2 engine, has been removed and moth balled. It now has a hot rod 3.2 with 46 PMOs, Amber rain shields, R shroud and "tin ware" being built Some of the classic R/ST goodies are the off center through the hood fuel filler and a 911R style oil tank, with external filler cap; The RSR welded in strut braces, drilled engine lid hinges and door handles. Custom door panels. They are similar to the light weight RS panels but have basket weave inserts and 356 arm rests and door pulls, and 914 latches. The original sport seats were rebuilt and recovered in Houndstooth fabric, and incorporate electric seat warmers, for those late fall drives. I’d collected a few parts over the years that I wanted to include in the car, such as the very rare Talbot flag mirrors, Four Cibie hood lights, vintage Abarth steering wheel, dash mounted stopwatches and a Halda Tripmaster. TRE has managed the project and Kundensport paint and body. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I thought you might freak out by seeing someone post a pic of your car! We have met a couple of times in person and Mike M in Annap sent me the pic. You might see mine soon.
I cut up a 1978 sc and have a similar motor to yours in it. 89 911 3.2 motoe switched to webers with JE pistons, Pauter rods etc... A Charlie Murphy motor from intersport. Hopefully you will see me blasting up 97 in my home built RSR it in a couple weeks. ![]()

We are having fun with this project.
What Rob has not told you yet, is that the suspension is tricked out for street/track use, the interior has custom door panels, rally watches, is getting "secret" stereo system, hidden speakers, rear shelf with cubby holes, a roll bar, and a bunch more cool details. The wheels are custom offset build fuchs by Harvey Weidman and shod with hoosier A 6's that have been hand grooved for street use. 15" tire selection is a little tough these days The exhaust is a slightly modified MK painted to emulate the early factory color, coupled to ssi's. The PMO's sit on new aluminum manifolds we have anodized black to simulate magnesium. The engine fan and ring have been restored to as the factory intended. All the plating on the engine matches. As noted the twill based shroud and surrounds are semi clear fiberglass and will yellow with age. We will post some pics next week of some of these details. Thanks to Rob for allowing us to build a special car.

I recently had opportunity to see this car in Monterey, it is spectacular! Another awesome vintage Porsche hot rod turned out by the crew at TRE.
Congrats to Dave and Rob on a very cool 911.
