Best brand of gasoline

There has been much discussion on the type and brand of oil to use in our cars, but what about gasoline. Is there a big differance in the major brands? I realize different states have laws about additives that determine the differances from state to state, (Calif. gas mixture is different than the New England mixture than the southern states mix, etc, etc,). If someone replies and says Mobil is the best, his Mobil is going to be different than mine to some degree. The major brands have to be competitive with one another, therefore I can't see one being clearly better than another or they would price themselves out of the market.

Come on-someone explain to me how Brand X can be so much better ("I only feed my baby brand X) than Brand Y ("My car won't even run on brand Y") and be only $.02/gal more.

BTW-My wife bought regular unleaded today for $0.87/gal.

$0.87/gall!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you guys do it!!!!!!!!!
Saying we get the crap taken out of us is an understatement!
Across here we pay £0.70 per LITRE!!!!
This works out at £3.18 gallon converted to $ = $4.45.
If we run around in anything greater than 1400cc you are felt to bring shame onto yourself!!!!
Back to the fuel thing, we only have 1 refinery across here and its owned by BP. All the petrol suppliers (in Scotland) get their fuel from this single refinery so it makes no difference what the fuel pump has stamped on it - it's BP fuel coming out of the nozzle.

Since Porsche recommends the Chevron Techron Fuel cleaner I use Chevron 93 octane primarily and if I get into a tight spot I just try to avoid the little no name places and stick to major brands. It wasn't a scientific test, but before I switched to Chevron I made a long trip and got about 21mpg after the switch to only Chevron gas I made a much longer trip, but averaged a higher average speed and actually saw the mileage increase to 23mpg. I'm sure there are lot's of factors that could have made the difference, but running higher speed and rpms I would have expected my fuel consumption to go up not down. I'm sticking with Chevron.

I use Chevron and Shell when I cannot find Chevron.Gas does make a difference,I got a tank of bad gas once in my Corvette and had to pull the tank and flush the system, a costly mistake.
My mechanic suggested that I only get gas from a brand name station (Ihad bought the gas from a Mom and Pop country store)
When I finally grew up and got my Porsche I remembered this and only get my gas from new looking stations.

Talking

Some folks on this BB with well tuned p-cars, who do lots of driving (sorry, not me!) have got to do a controlled experiment and test the major brands of gasoline.

Miles per gallon, changes in performance, that kind of thing...

We can all agree the no name stuff belongs in a Hundai, but there must be differences between the majors.

Any takers?

Most of the gas in Western Washington comes from the BP refinery right down the road from me. The way I understand it, the difference in the brands comes after the refining process when they put in the additives. I use Chevron for the Techron.

Rob....we do it by not taxing the hell out of it......if they tried that here the polititians would be voted out of office in no time.

Also...does anyone know if they sell 93 Octane in Seattle? I havnt seen anything higher than 92..

Thanks

Problem we have here is that none of the political parties are pro-motorist - we constantly get force fed that taxes raised on fuel are going to pay for the schools, hospitals and pensioners etc - aye right!!!!!!!!
80% of what we pay is pure tax - i recently heard that due to low refining costs here, before tax is added - we have the cheapest fuel in europe!!!!!!!
