Less brakes, more gas!
|
Looks like 30 in the 1st 2 pages of the classifieds... Of course Joey has 15 of them
, but still that is a lot 911s going down and a lot of them are long hoods. Makes me sad ![]() -Michael

Agreed. I've got a '71 targa and a '79 targa that are meeting the sawzall this weekend. The restored value these days makes the restoration cost prohibitive.

How about late 80's models? Is the equation swinging toward part-out on them as well?

Falling prices + many cars for sale + no money + expensive to repair/restore = parts car

Sad maybe, but helpful for those of us finding the missing pieces for 35 year old car!
(and maybe that means that the value of mine will go up with less around )

I'm sure mine is worth more in parts than as a whole. Simple economics (and my wife) tell me I should stop grinding and welding on the dang thing and unload it but I can't help myself.

Let 'em go. It just makes the pristine, concours-quality cars such as mine worth that much more.
Oh, wait . . .

I think part of the recent large number of cars listed in the classifieds may have something to do with the time of year. During the summer, people who have had a car sitting in their barn for years sell them off and people who have had project cars sitting in their sideyard part them out. It's an attempt to get it done before the snow and rain starts falling. At least that's how I work personally and suspect I am not alone.
I've got a '66 912 that I've been sitting on for a couple of years. It's not worth putting back together because it was hit really hard in the rear end and bent the frame and torsion tubes. Couple that with a bunch of rocker rust and it's a parts car. It's got a lot of really nice trim and certain mechanical things, but it's a parts car for sure. I'm trying to tear it down and get it off my property before it snows, even if I am going to put many of the parts in the shed and sit on them for the next project.

Is the US market so much different from the european one? Here it still makes a lot of sense restoring a pre-74 911. Only if you can't do it yourself and have to have a shop do it for you, it might be stretching it, but otherwise.....
Mine cost roughly 18k euro to restore (including purchasing the car), market value would be in the low 30K and insurance value is currently 40K. And the prices are still rising......

I noticed that as well - all the 911s being parted out over in the classifieds. Pretty sad! I think it has to do with all the cars for sale and not moving, you can only drop your price so far. I'm thinking of selling my SC but I'll take a big hit...

Yep, I just covered mine up and forgot about it. No hurry to compete to the bottom.
