Hell yeah, the sprint counts...remember that one well. Matter of fact, it was DeLorean who pushed for that car, that engine. He went on to gain fame producing the "snowmobile" car in Ireland. Funny, I saw a sprint at a cruise-in near here a couple of years ago. Didn't know any of those were left alive. Maybe we should all remember our "roots" whenever we catch ourselves getting just a wee bit arrogant about our P cars, eh?

The First car I got 19 years ago and still have is a 4 spd 69 GTO it still has the factory 8 track. My dad bought it new when he got back from Nam and it was given to me when I turned 16. He would like it back but now I've had it longer then he has and he cant afford it.
![]() I also had a Convertible 69 GTO that was very modified that I eventually sold for my first 911. Sold that car for 16,000 four years ago. (wish I still had it) Had a 5.0 mustang Convert. (yawn) and a 6spd Corvette Convert with ZR1 Wheels,Borla exhaust and chip Michael Marshall |

Mustangs and GTO's are not considered to be hot rods , they are muscle cars . To be called a "Hot Rod" a car must be no newer than 1948 . Duece coupes, high boys and track t's are hot rods , not a 78 camero.

It's obvious there are a lot of us with Detroit iron in our veins, some from years ago, some fresh. I always feel like I have some kind of bond with the hot rod guys, I think I understand what gets them pumped-I am a little jealous of their "cheap" horsepower-and I always watch the hot rod shows on TV. However, I never get tired of turning the key in the 911 and hearing that sound, it works for me.

Ahem, ah Jerry, got to beg to differ...
I think you mean Street Rod, not Hot Rod. Take a look in Hot Rod Magazine and you'll see tons of Camaro, Mustang, Dodge, whatever, hot rods. I doubt anyone would really argue that a '69 Camaro with a blown, dual carbed 500 CID BB Chevy with a flame paint job and tubbed rear end is NOT a hot rod. Your fat fender cars are found in mags like Street Rodder. ------------------ Jay '68 912 V8 |

Jerry I agree, I wouldnt call a GTO or Mustang a Hot Rod. But if you reread the original post PWD72S said Hod Rod or American Muscle.

Yes, that's what I said, rod or muscle. But, how about the '34 coupe Roland mentioned, running an LT1? Gawd, how cool that must look, cruising europe! BTW, Roland. A '34 isn't really a "deuce"...that honor is reserved for a '32...how the phrase started. "Deuce"..2..'32. Actually, the '34 Grille is much sexier, methinks. Roland, is it a 3 or 5 window? Either one, "way cool"...and it's definitely a ROD! I still get turned on looking at a chopped coupe or a highboy roadster. Alas, I was always too tall for 'em, and now I'm too fat as well! But, of all the old cars listed? '34 coupe and Hemi Roadrunner...would be hard to pick a favorite there...

Along with my 78sc in the family I also have a 67 Mustang FastBack, 56 Ford ThunderBird, 53 Ford Victoria and a 47 Ford Coupe thats been radically customized. The 47 is one of my favorites. It has a 302 V8, 6" chop, body channeled over the frame, 54 Chevy grill bar, Frenched tail and head lights, Cadilac bumprers, Independent front suspention, shaved door and trunk handles all are remote control opening. The list goes on and on. The best part is I did most of the work myself....TargaEuro

1)I've owned a few too. My first was a '56 Chevy Nomad wagon, bought it in 1967 for $350! I was 18yrs old, wow, it was fun! a real California Car, many days at the beach.
2)Second, was a '67 Corvette, 427 High Perf., 4 speed, coupe. Bought it in 1970, after returning from Viet Nam for $3250. Did some upgrades such as Sig Erson cam, Holley 780, electric fuel pump, Dual Point distributor, and CDI ingintion. That car was awesome, what acceleration! 3)Third, was a '68 Triumph TR250, bought in 1973. Made only in 1968, actually was a TR4IRS with the future TR6 engine. Those little cars hauled ass! light with a lot of torque. I know it could wipped my '87 in a drag race up to about 80 to 90 mph. 4)I still own an '84 Corvette. Keep it in super condition, done some mod's like chip, headers, bored out trottle bodies, and head/port work. It can annilate my'87 in acceleration and top speed, and most other stock '84 - '95 Vettes. It's too bad I didn't keep the Nomad or '67 Vette. Together they would probably be worth as much as a new 996 or excellent 993 Turbo S! |

Yeah Movin, who knew the 67 would be worth 50 grand today? I sold my 70 Mach 1 for $3800 in 1979. A friend of mine bought one last month for $14,500. Ouch!

Good to see all the GTO's. I restored a 67 GTO three years ago. Sold that, and restored my 69 stingray 427/435 roadster w/ original 4.11 gears. That thing was a wild ride, not many cars could come close to catching that from a rolling start. Now my final project is a keeper...65 GTO "three deuces and a four speed and a 389. Turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO" Nice to see other people appreciate classic american muscle.

Wow! When I started this string, I thought there might be a few with hot rods or muscle in their past, but some lucky guys still doing it, and appreciating Porsches as well? A tip of the hat to all. To bad we can't arrange a real time cruise-in! I have two neighbors who are also car nuts. One a chevvy man, with a '56 Bel Air, and a '66 'Vette Coupe. THe other a ford man, with a boss 302 and a Shelby GT, 1970 I believe. What's sad is that I can talk detroit with them, but they don't have the first clue about P cars, aren't interested in learning, either. Oh well, to each his own. To all the guys with only P cars? If you know of a detroit iron cruise-in near you, make an effort to go. You'll have a great time, and the skill level displayed on some of the show machines will blow you away.
Believe me, these guys KNOW paint, not to mention mechanical skills... |

Wanna hear a cry in your beer story?
Father-in-law was BIG into drag racing early on. Bought a '66 A/C Cobra (new), sold it a year later for a factory racecar '67 427 Vette. They only made something like 10 factory race 'vettes that year, he had two. Sold them later for other cars. You don't bring this up with him in casual conversation. He went to Bloomington Gold a few years ago and saw one of his old race vettes go down the auction block for high six figures. It was just as he had bought it, not even a repaint. |

RarlyL8,
Was that an L-88 Vette? I always wanted one. The L-88 Vettes were something you never forget, that idle was ferocious! It was a mean, take no prisoners machine. |

I had a 1970 Chevelle a few years ago. Really nice car had a 350 LT-1 out of a Vette with a few mods on it. Was said to be 375-400hp. It was indeed pretty quick.
