What is acceptable? - Leakdown 993 Non-Vario Ram Motor
I'm planning on doing a 3.6 conversion to make a track/ weekend car. What numbers are acceptable for a 95 993 Non-Vario Ram motor. What will these numbers mean in regards to horsepower loss or maintenance required?
Thanks guys, anyone with info please help. Wil |

Compression test results should be about 180psi . High and even is more important than the actual number. I like to see less than 10psi variation.
A leakdown is expressed as a percentage . I use 100psi air supply and hope to see less than 5 % loss .

Forgot to mention that the motor is out of the car and has been sitting for awhile / cold leakdown.

In addition to %, a leakdown test will tell you if it is leaking from the rings or valves by listening to where the air escapes.
What % are you reading? And where is it leaking from? More than 2-3% I would be trying to figure out where and why..... |

It's leaking 10% on one cylinder, two of them have 18% leakage. The rest are between 10-18%. The air is leaking from the exhaust valves.

Now in 993 land ...

Pig in a poke. An engine like that could have crap on the valves and it is cold to boot. It may just be fine! That said, I wouldn't spend more than a grand over core value on anything that sits on a pallet unless it has very good results. Why not get a high mileage donor at core value and go through it, so you will know what you have? Or if you don't want that, get a running engine in a vehicle that can be listened to and returns good dynamic and leak down compression numbers.

Numbers are high but engine might be OK. Numbers will usually improve on a warm and recently run engine.Only takes a little rust or carbon on a valve to explain 10%.Any idea of what miles are on this engine? If the price is negotiable then consider a low offer and allow for a top end If you can do the work then rebuilt heads can be done under $2K. Labour is about 25 hrs so thats why most top ends end up over $5.

Those leakdown numbers are way too high, in my opinion. Even cold, I'd be looking for 5% or less for a turnkey motor. If you are handy and can rebuild it.........I'd still buy it for a reduced price.
