I'm due for pads and given the consensus in this thread I'm thinking of going with the PFC97. Quick look and it seems our host doesn't sell them and all I'm getting with online searches is fragmented results that don't really list the pads for both front and rear and have a generic Porsche 911 1969-1989 which isn't very comforting to buy.

I haven't tracked my car yet, but it's a possibility, I basically just autocross 6 to 8 events a year. So feel free to chime in if something else would suit me better.

Also, anyone have a good source and specific part number for fit? I've got an 86 Carrera, with the steel A caliper, wide.

I don't think the PFC 97 compound exists anymore ... from what i gather it has been replaced by the 06 and 08 compounds !
You might want to try Apex or OG Racing, they still might have some 97's

Cheers !

Yes, Wildcat is correct. I would run the 08's but for your application I would choose another pad altogether. The PFC's are not designed for cold operating ranges as you will see in Autocross. Track is a different animal.

I don't autocross so hopefully someone else who does can make a good recommendation for you.

Cheers, James

PF97 still exist. They're just slowly being phased out. I asked a friend in the parts biz what the deal what and he said PF is just not producing pads for certain sizes any longer. Also said if you order 10 sets, they'll make them up for you!

Agreed the PFC 06 supersedes the 97 and now the PFC08 is superseding the 06. OG racing is a great resource.

Suppliers who used to carry both the front pad size (45 pad designation) and rear pad size (31 pad designation) for 76-89 SC/Carrera are not showing the rear pads for a lot of different brands. That's troubling.

For autocross I would think something like Hawk HPS would be a good choice. They're a step up from typical street pads and give good cold bit. Although OEM Textar, Jurid brand Porsche pads are VERY good pads. I would think they'd be plenty suitable for autocross. They can withstand road course use, I know that from experience. They don't last long but they still can manage without fading!

I have rarely if ever had a fade problem, but my 3.2 is 2500 lbs.

Brakes are stock, lines are stn stl on rears and new oe on front.

I would bleed those lines well first, then duct.

Could be driving style, i tend to consider the car to the point of being on the slow side..

I had trouble with boiling fluid for my first few DE's. What worked for me was:

Carrera front brakes (thicker rotors)
Motul 600 (fresh for each event)
Removed rotor baking plates
993 air diverter scoops
Experience!

I can now get through a weekend without boiling fluid. Now my problem is transferring too much pad material onto the rotors. I'm using Ferodo DS2500 pads, which last about 2 weekends. I think I'm going to switch to PFC next time to see if that helps.

Also, I still cook the dust boots on the rear calipers after one to two events.

rotor block off plates
car lightened to 2,450
caliper piston seal replaced every time rotors are changed
no caliper dust seal
master cylinder catch tank
braided brake lines
bleed brakes before every event
hose off brake/rotor dust after every event

I think that's everything!

Front pads and rotors last about 700 track miles, rear about twice that.

Those are all the same things I do as well. My car is coming in at about 2600#. No cross drilled rotors, and I use ATE fluid. Some day I'll get around to upgrading but for now I'm having so much damn fun I feel like I don't need to worry about it. As long as I'm embarrassing the big motor cars I feel like I have done my car proud.

Sounds like what I have heard referred to as "green fade." This happens when the pads are not broken in properly before hitting track temps. This is true running street or certain track pads. I had that happen when looking for a "dual purpose pad " and ran Hawk HPS.

On the advice of one of the most respected wrenches on the forum, I tried Pagid Oranges on my SC for a couple of events. They were absolutely terrible. When I changed cars and went to the 996, I also went to PFC 97's with ATE fluid. What a completely different experience. No fade and great stopping even at the end of a 30 minute session.

Back to ATE Super Blue for a minute. I still have half a liter from when I flushed my brakes less than 60 days ago. How long is it safe to use the rest of that can, assuming the top is on tight and stored properly?

I went with a set of the Hawk HPS Plus pads since the autocross is my primary objective and they seems very street-able pads as well. Anyone know if they're able to accept pad wear sensors and if for the front glue or notch style?

It should be fine to use as top up fluid until you flush it again using ATE Gold before your next event. I think if you have that much fluid remaining in the bottle you might not be getting all the old fluid out. I usually have an inch or two of fluid remaining in the can when I'm done flushing the brakes.

I had the Padig BLACK on my 3.2 and they really rocked on the street and track - very "grippy" - I really liked them but wore out a complete set in less than 1 season - as for the comments of no brake fade on that 2500# car...I didnt fade either - till my "slow car" started being driven faster

upgraded to 964's with Pagid yellow's

NOW the real reason for my visit - What are the 993 scoops, what's the part number and who has a picture of them installed !!

Here's a thread that discusses them and installation. For the price, Id' think it would be a straight forward piece to "manufacture" at home.

Ed,

I think you'd be better off with an AjUsa type of front brake cooling ... i tried the 993 type deflectors and they are really too low for our cars. They're relatively cheap at $16.00 each but i tore off two of them going over speed bumps before i made my own brake cooling system !

Cheers !

Ed,

Tarret has the cheapest price on those brake cooling kits ... i had to make my own due to my 996TT brakes but they are identical to the AJusa kit, just a little bigger !

It's really quite simple to make your own,if you want some details PM me your email address !

Cheers !

Also, don't confuse bleed with flush. Flush for me is basically around a quarter of the new can pushed out of each corner. Bleed to some folks is simply going to each wheel and making sure there are no bubbles coming out when they open the valve. ( I witnessed this first hand with a couple of guys at DE's who were troubleshooting issues "losing their brakes. ) I usually finish with just a little left which I carry to the DE and then never use.
