explain the redline on my $250 911

Hi guys,

I bought a $250 911. What, you might ask, is a $250 911?

Well, it's a 911T, vintage 1973. And it's ROW without (currently) a title. We'll work on that later.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't have any fenders, doors or a hood. Come to think of it, it doesn't have an interior or a speck of shiny paint anywhere. Get the picture?

So, common-sense wonders, why in the world...

Because it was $250 and it has a complete 2.4 motor in it that was supposedly running before it was parked. It's got a 915 in it, along with all other running gear and three nice Fuchs wheels. So, my foolish mind said, why not?

Anyway, it also has a 7200RPM redline tachometer.

Do any of you early 911 guys know if this is correct? It seems to me that a "T" wouldn't have such a redline? I've driven some early cars, but never an "S". But, I don't have a clear memory of the different engine redlines, etc.

Of course, the tach may have been replaced at some time. I'm just curious to see what the collective wisdom is on this thing.

Thanks!

David

does an "S" tach have about a 7200 RPM redline? If so, I guess that's what's been stuck into my car. Wouldn't it be a hoot if the motor was converted to "S" specs before it went into it's long hibernation? The only thing wrong with that pipe dream is that the ROW carbs are still intact.

I'll post a pic as soon as I can, but it won't be for a few days.

Later,

David

Dave you have just made a damn good deal!

If even just two of the wheels are servicable you should be ahead.

As for the tach - its probably been replaced with a second hand one from an S at some point. The maximum engine speeds for the 1973 T, E, and S models are:

T = 6500
E = 7100
S = 7300

One way of checking the engine is to look at the finned cylinder barrels - On Ts they are made of cast iron which rusts in about 2 minutes. E and S models are made of alloy. If the engine has been seriously uprated then its cast iron barrels should have been replaced with alloy ones...

To repeat - good deal, you should be very happy, no matter what!

Guys,

I am excited. It was a good deal, methinks, and I'm glad you all agree.

I'm not sure what plans I have yet b/c I haven't really inspected the integrity of the car. At the very least, I have a 911 engine to try a rebuild on myself. I've always wanted to try a Leland-esque rebuild. If the car itself is serviceable, that's a bonus. My mechanic tells me that this 2.4 is a great start for a 2.7 RS or 2.8 RSR replica engine. That would be a lot of fun!

I will post some photos, and thanks for the information!

Okay guys, a little update.

The 911 is coming home for good tomorrow morning. I spent a few hours at it's current resting place preparing it for the short trip to my house. I removed three original Fuchs rims with (dare I say "vintage") Goodyear VR60 "Gatorbacks" that were flat. For the trip, I just put some old cookies with inflated tires on it.

I removed some loose pieces in the car. Without doors, anything is likely to fall out on the way home!

I discovered that the deal will include a nice original steering wheels, some chrome door handles, some pull out rear quarter windows, the gearshift knob and boot, window winders, some trim and lenses, etc. Somehow, the decklid disappeared. But, it was original and I will eventually buy a ducktail for it (in, like, 20 years when this is finally roadworthy). I'll post some photos later on.

But, by noon tomorrow, the $250 911 will be coming home with it's complete engine and 915 intact.

Later,

David
