Here's a photo showing where the engine numbers are. In the center, about a third of the way over from the left edge is the serial number. In this case, it's 6631248. In the center of the picture, you see the type number. This one is 911/83. For a '72, the type numbers are:

911/51 911T
911/52 911E
911/53 911S

As for the serial number, look at the second digit. These will be:

1 911T
2 911E
3 911S

If it's not the original engine, we'd have to look further. Just have a look when you can and see what you find.

Cheers,
JR

First off, welcome to Pelican and the disease, Tweeze. You are starting an awesome journey here and I will be following this thread to see how your car turns out. Just remember, the only successful journey is one you enjoy.

Next, I think I can help you out on quieting some of these guys up from clamoring for photos, and it will stay relevant... Not to mention, the thread I am about to share with you is, at least in my personal opinion, the ultimate homage to the man behind one of the ultimate 911's - and it just so happens to be a 72. So, post a pose in the following thread and welcome to the most awesome online community in the world...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/237982-ultimate-jack-olsen-self-portrait-thread.html

(oh, and for your next 911 purchase, please get yourself a nice SC! muuuuuuhahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Holy moly!!!!! I was laughing out loud forever looking at all those pictures!!! Thank you so much for pointing out that thread! Yes, I will play this game. But since I don't have a picture of me with the car yet, maybe I can post a pic of me on this Camaro and the wonderful people can photoshop me on a beautiful Viper Green 72' 911 Targa picture? At least until I get mine finished and then I will post a real one in several years? Ha! I took this picture as a joke and look! I have the Jack Olsen "no smile" look too! And BTW, don't make fun of my white Mr. Rogers tennis shoes, I was in SF to run the half marathon and my running shoes are the only ones I packed. My friends all make fun of my "come hither" look and then I'm sportin' the white shoes! Maybe someone can photoshop cool shoes while they are at it? Ha! Yes, more women need to be represented on that thread!!! Again, thank you for the at least 15 minutes of straight laughing...

And boys, you can thank him for getting me to post a picture of my hottie troll self. No need to ask for more "window" pictures. Now all of you SHUT IT!

PS: I will post this on that thread too. It needs to be bumped back up. Hilarious!!!

Ummm... if it walked upright... scratch that... if it had opposable thumbs... scratch that. Oh hell, you'd hit anything! (but I tend to agree with you on this one)

Thanks! I will have to try and look at this when I get back home from my trip. Your pictures are awesome! Thank you so much for your help and answering my questions. Cross your fingers and hope that I can get the engine lid open.

Yep, welcome and thumbs up for getting on it.

You need a second person pulling the lever and at the same time try to 'move and press' the lid to the passenger side and then pull. That worked for me when mine got stuck.

Now I have attached a ziptie on the opening lever at the lock in case the wire should snip one day.

I bought my 930 last year from AZ and it's pretty rust free so yours has a good chance to be the same way.

BTW: Is the car a 'he' now that you're a girl?

Hey Tweezers. Welcome to the forum! The advice you'll get here is worth more than gold.

Here's a pic that'll have to do until your green beauty is ready for a photo shoot.

Alright, this made me laugh so hard, I needed a tissue!
Welcome to the forum tweezers! Good luck with your project. I'll be following in step with you soon on my '71. The early cars are so unique...as a side note, you bare a remarkable resemblance to my wife!!! Troll?, I think not!

You ought to use targamaniac for all your photoshopping needs. It's rather slimming...except for the part where he made you about 3'6" tall. Maybe he took that troll thing a bit too far.

Anyways, from a fellow 72' owner, welcome.

Since your seats are likely in need of work, it might make sense to just replace them. I have a friend here in LA (not active on this forum) who has a pair of '72 seats for sale with fabric center sections. Could be good for AZ driving. At $350, much cheaper than dealing with your existing seats, and you can sell of the old seat cores for $150-200. In many cases, you'll find removing and replacing components of the car make financial sense.

OTOH, you could go over the top with aftermarket seats. I put these in my '72 coupe.

You can get them in tan with houndstooth centers. In these early cars, the interior color was confined to seats and side panels, so changing colors is trivial. Tan works very well with Viper.

Did you check with any of the Porsche upholstery restorers? Last time I had core seats to sell, they were willing to pay the above prices.
