Is the "Check Engine" light on?

Might need the top end rebuilt if so.

You better invest in a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection).

993

Check the "mint" body for previous accident damage - is it original paint?

If it has had no shunts and good original paint, I'd say $14k is a very good price - even if it has the dreaded SAI issue. You could perform a top end rebuild and still have a bit of "equity."

The drivetrain alone in parts value is worth almost $14K. A 3.6 core is like, what, $5K nowadays and the G50 6 speed is hard to find less than $4K. OK, not exactly $14K total for engine and trans but that leaves $5K for the body. A roller 993 is worth way more than $5K!!

This is one of those things where if you don't act fast, you lose a potential steal of a deal. But if you do act fast, too fast, and find you've got a basketcase that needs a ton of work on engine, clutch, suspension, body, etc., you could end up with a real money pit. Still, you could flip the money pit (before it becomes a money pit) for a breakeven or small loss and still come out not smelling too bad......

BTW I thought the '95 doesn't have the dreaded check engine light frequency like the later '96-up cars that are OBD-II, because it doesn't have the SAI (secondary air injection)?

KTL - you are right... and yes - it would be difficult to find a 993 '1995 core engine for 5K

That is a steal. Buy it as long as it has a good title and the body is decent. IMHO

Nope, not quite right. The 95 does have secondary air injection system. What's different is that the OBD I does not have the related sensors to tell the ECU whether it's functioning correctly. Therefore, the CEL problem doesn't exist. But the SAI problem does (if you consider it a problem; most don't).

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds too good to be true? What would a car in decent shape go for? $25K? Why is the seller leaving 10 grand on the table? Or is my estimate incorrect and 993s are now going for Carrera money?

Thanks for the correction Dave. Upside there is the engine doesn't care much about it and the emissions thing is a non-issue for some since here in IL 1995 and older cars are exempt from testing. Downside is if it was a '96 the VarioRam would be a nice feature in terms of torque.

Yep, I meant to say a core 3.6 in terms of it being semi-junk and in dire need of a rebuild. Seemingly decent running 3.6 cores are way over $5K, more like $7.5K?. That just cracks me up too. The 911 engine adventures are rarely in the realm of cheap. No disrespect meant to the 3.6 owners/conversions/lovers, but $7.5K could buy you a real nice complete car like a solid 944.

993 values have shot back up. A friend is selling a low mileage silver/black '96 C2 RS look and asking what he paid for it 4-5 years ago is not unreasonable, as people are showing quite an interest.

Well, it is all relative. If it needs engine and transmission work, you can easily double the price and then the car is worth less than what you have in it. I'd still buy it, making sure you have good body, and carefully evaluate it before spending. If it doesn't turn out a decent car to invest in, you will have no trouble to unload it again for 14k in one piece or parted out.

Sounds cheap???
Cant go wrong?
Whats the cheapest 993 in decent shape you seen out there?
Should I take a crack at it?
Sounds like a rare find. Be aware that the engine wire harness might be ready to go through melt-down, or the car is being sold because the owner hasn't been able to track down various electrical glitches because of that harness.

The oil leaks might be only the rocker covers, especially if they've never been off.

Probably worth a PPI.

The wiring harness is a recall item - free at the dealer.

Buncha optimists here...if it's a salvage title and tip trans I think we'd all pass.

I'd certainly check it out though!

first of all, let see if the seller is local or from europe? If he'she is in africa for some errands, then no question ask

95 = no OBD2. A plus in my opinion!
