Ive never taken over 5000,but DAMN,going thru that first gear is a BLINK of the eye. Any reason why that first gear is so low? 40MPH and it's get to second or it feels like the car is going to leave the ground...lol

I agree that redlining it may be a bit extreme, I haven't taken my car much past 6,000. So there is still a bit of room to spare.

When I was 16 (and stupid

) I was learning to drive stick for the first time in the 911. 1st gear was over so quick that I remember telling my friend that top speed in first was about 15 mph! I hadn't pushed it yet, so I didn't really know but 0-40 is FAST

My 87 3.2 has 207,999 miles (+ ~20 miles) without being cracked. The odometer just quit on me yesterday, though! (I'm guessing it's the odometer gear).

All in all the engine has ran great. I do think I'm missing a few horses, so maybe it's time for an overhaul... But maybe the missing horses lately is due to me running my new A/C non-stop lately (I'm in Charleston and it's hot).

A couple of things for the original poster. Don't warm up your car in the drive way. They don't get proper airflow, and don't like it. Do start the car, let the oil pressure build up for 20 or 30 seconds and then drive gently, at 1/4 throttle or so until warm.

When warm, you can extend the car, and drive it as you like. It is my opinion that running a cold engine hard can be bad for it, and could shorten the life of the valve guides. Cold oil does not like to flow into the small clearances where it is needed, but will go shooting through the large passages.

Use the right oil. An oil with anti wear additives. ZDDP will protect your cams, and prevent costly rebuilds.

Buy two books. The Used 911 Story, by Peter Zimmerman, and 101 projects for your 911 by Wayne Dempsey. Read them.

It is OK to drive your car. They like to be run, and seem happy being driven.

They say that many 993 engines will clog the anti smog passages when run around at low RPMs. You could have less carbon deposits in the cylinders and on the valves if you use good gas and let the car breathe and burn it hot.
