Hand throttle lever

I have a 73 911T CIS 2.4 My hand lever throttle between the seats seem to have come loose or disconnected from the rod that goes back to the engine compartment. What can I expect to see, and how do I go about reconnecting it. Any pictures or explaination would help.

Thank you, Stan

The lever goes to a plastic bracket that rides the throttle rod and pulls against a collar with a set screw. On mine the plastic bracket, part 20, had become brittle and had to be replaced.

I also had to replace mine.
Requires partial removal of e-brake assembly.

I was told never to pull on the hand throttle without simultaneously pressing on the gas to relieve the strain on that piece of plastic.

David,

Never heard that before. Sounds like a great idea though!

Thanks...

Long time Porsche mechanic/Engine Builder told me that when he replaced my brittle/broken one.

Thank you. Sounds good to me. I will remember to press the gas petal when engaging the throttle level. Now I just need to figure out how to get to that broken connection and fix it.

Thank you. I think I will also remove the passenger seat as well to get full access to that lever to view connection issue.

hand throttle replacement

Hey Stan:
I was able to replace this piece in my car without removing the driver's seat - not easy but doable

Tony,

I was able to unbolt the lever plate without removing any seats. I also unassembled the two level arms to enable me to look under the plate. The plate only tilts and lifts so far and I can see the white plastic thing hanging and not connected to anything. How is this thing connected to the throttle rod?

Stan

Hi Stan:
The white plastic piece slips over the pin on the base of the lever and is held on by a washer and thin retaining clip (the diagram and the top of thread shows this well). These were a pain for me to get on.

The other end of the plastic piece is forked. The cable fits between the forked end which sits behind the plunger/adjustment sleeve. When you pull the cold start throttle lever up, the white plastic piece pushes the plunger and cable which depresses the gas pedal and sets the cold start valve in the engine. The open end of the fork should be facing the drivers door. Make sure that the adjustment sleeve screw is visible through the small hole as pictued in RoninB's post when you are done. (You don't need to touch this when putting the plastic piece in, but it could move in the process of replacement.) This enables you to make any adjustments to idle setting on cold starts going forward.

Hope this helps.

Tony

When you get the plastic widget correctly installed, be sure to adjust the maximum RPM that it establishes to about 1500 to 2000. Otherwise, if you just pull up on the lever (too much) the cold engine will race at an inappropriate speed.

Take C clip and weird washer behind it off making sure that they do not get lost. Slide broken piece of crap off, once the old white broken piece is off you can look in the hole better, and with the new one in hand you will get the idea as to how it slides on to linkage. Slide new one on, place washer and C clip back on, making sure c clip does not fly off into thin air. Push emg. brake into place and do not bolt it in. Start car and hope that the little slider (79) did not move, if it did it's a bear to adjust properly. Start car and pull up on lever, if it raises idle turn car off and bolt emg. brake into place. Sit back and have a beer.

No that was not a joke, i have no idea what this part is you all are talking about. Really. I've never heard of such a thing before.

edit: upon reading it again, it sounds like this is some kind of mechanical choke, for mixture enrichment during cold startup??

the manual throttle allow you to set a high idle when the engine is cold

I'd clean & re-grease the hand brake parts & also use a light to look around inside the tunnel for rust, dead bodies of small creatures, live gremlins and buried treasure while it is opened up.

if the seat(s) were removed, check the bolt threads & wrenching features before re-installation; and address any sound deadening removal, stereo installs etc. you may want to do

there are several other threads on this topic - if you search and find them you might want to link them all together for the next person passing this way in the future
