Just bought a '79 911 and need help

Hello everyone,
This is my 1st post on here and I look forward to many more. I just purchased a '79 911 widebody and have lots of questions. 1st off, this is not actually a turbo as you can see from my pics. I have been told it was an original widebody but don't actually believe it. From what I've seen only the turbos were factory widebodies. It is however all steel. Can anyone tell me what I have from my pics? Ok 2nd, I need to figure out what I'm missing from the engine compartment. I can tell I'm at least missing the airbox but after that I don't know. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for having me!

Pmauch:

Welcome! Please add your location to your profile.

I'm no wide body expert, but I know there was a factory turbo-look option. But I am not sure if it was offered in '79 (I don't think so). Maybe you got a 930 body shell with a different motor? You might want to post your VIN so those more knowledgeable than I can help.

Also, post some more pics of your car!

Cheers,

Paul.

Hey Paul,
I will add that now. There should be pics in my garage. Are you not able to view? I'm new at this so not sure if I did it right. Know anything about what you see on the pic of the engine?

Thanks!

No widebodies in 79, and you are missing the entire CIS system to start. 911's don't come with single downdraft carburetors..

it looks as if u have a custom intake setup. interesting.
its not stock and it might be a carburetor or a throttle body injection setup

The setup on top says Holley? I'm pretty good at following instructions but honestly don't have a huge amount of automotive knowledge just stored in the memory banks.

It has a 3.2 fan, the distributor is SC CD box has the label for a 6 pin connection I think.
Never seen the injection but looks like 73 CIS runners welded to a box and a quadra jet carb..The fuel set on top of the engine is not Porsche. The wide body has to be installed, nothing factory on an SC.

I've never seen that type of intake/fuel setup. How does it run? The car looks great from the pics in your garage.

What is the history on it, and how did you get it?

Factory wide bodies have 930 brakes and suspension. Your rear calipers will be on the back side of the rotor, closer to the rear bumper instead on the front side of the rotor.

Thanks everyone. It appears the fuel set up is holley. can anyone tell me what parts I'm going to need to get this thing going by what you see? (assuming everything else works?) Just trying to see what I'm looking at. I also have an issue with one of the brake calipers locked up so I think I'm going to have to rebuild that system as well. The body itself though is solid. Only a couple spots of rust that I can find so far.

I would dump the Holley setup and those runners as I highly doubt any thought went into the fuel flow per cylinder, it looks like a total hack. Best case scenario is to go with an aftermarket EFI setup at this point IMHO.

This sure looks like a cobbled together setup to get a single Holly carb to work on a 911. While not unheard of, I'm betting that any of these conversions are different from each other in some way. That'll make troubleshooting this setup difficult, but not impossible.

Does it run now? How well, or poorly?

Are we sure the Holley is a carb? It looks like a two-barrel down-draft throttle-body injection to me.

I think your best bet is to take the car to an independent (not a dealership) Porsche shop & let them take a look at it. I'm sure someone on this board can send you in the right direction. That way you'll get an idea of exactly what it needs, and the cost. Depending on their answer, you might have the opportunity to drop in a whole new (upgraded) power plant.

Arne - I think that is exactly what it is. I'm going to take some more pics of it and post a little later. If that's what I have, do you have any idea what I'm missing?

I'll also check the rear brakes to see how the calipers are positioned.

The car was actually repoed by a gentlemen that had previously given someone a loan on it and defaulted. It was then stored for him by a guy at my company. I've seen it around for a while and finally decided to ask about it. They put me in touch with the owner and all she wrote. Unfortunately, with this kind of history, I don't know much about the car.

For sure you will need an air filter. If it isn't laying in the luggage compartment you will have to source one that fits that throttle body.

Certainly Holley throttle body injection, I have always wondered about this setup and would actually like to know more, do you know who installed it? There must be a CPU/Brain somewhere can you take a pic of that?

Thanks,
Cliff

Dump the Holley system. I had that exact system on my '79 Jag with a Supercharged Ford 302 and it never was able to adjust to wide open throttle properly. It either ran really rich at idle or stumbled at WOT. Even with the supercharger disconnected. And whatever you do, don't run it without a proper cover on it or you'll end up on the losing end of a car fire like I did....
