Clutch/Pedals Extensions?
My lovely wife is as big a car nut as I am..maybe even more! She finds it terribly difficult to drive the 911 since she's short (4'11"). It's particularly the long(ish) clutch travel that gives her issues. I understand where's she coming from, since with my 31" inseam the clutch can be a bit of a stretch. But for her, the seat must be up VERY close. This is not only uncomfortable, but make shifting gears difficult...2nd gear comes close to the seat since the seat is moved all the way up.
I was thinking of making some 1" (or more) extensions to put on all the pedals. I'll likely use some hard, dense wood and then put some covers over them. Unless somebody else has some other ideas? Thanks in advance!

If carefully done, and no more slippery than stock, should work. With the rubber pads off brake and clutch, you can just drill a couple of holes in the steel pads of the levers, and rivet to them, or tap them for machine screws, or just run a bolt through with a nut on the back to hold your pieces on. You can drill through the gas pedal easily enough as well.
The one thing you don't want to do is have something which has any chance of getting loose in operation. Most disconcerting. You can ease the "seat too far forward" issue a bit by making a nice upholstered L shaped pad, which will sit her up a bit and forward, with the seat itself not so close to the shift lever. But that won't necessarily get the wheel in a comfortable position. Me, I favor sitting close, NASCAR style. Better leverage on un power assisted steering. |

Hydrocket, I have a 30" inseam and have to move the seat closer but my youngest son who is a couple of inches shorter than me needed a closer setting. So I made a 1" wooden extensions for the brake, clutch, and gas pedal extensions in 1998 and still have them at the moment. And Rennline aluminum pedals on them. So my next project is to do same conversion for my son's '87 Carrera whose wife is barely 5 feet tall and likes to drive stick shift. But instead of using wooden materials, I'll use synthetic or hard rubber materials to prevent the spacers from cracking or falling apart. The 1" wood has a tendency to dry up and crack over time. Would love to see pics if you can spare them? A bit from the side so I can see the extensions. Yea...was also thinking of using nylon blocks or maybe plexi. Either would work. I'm a master CNC machinist, but don't have any open machine time to do aluminum ones.

I have a Rennline pedal set in my car.
They have an adjustable throttle plate that goes between the stock throttle pedal and their pedal cover that brings the throttle about an inch closer. I got longer screws to increase the distance an add'l half inch. The brake and clutch pedal covers will bring them a little closer, but you'll probably need an add'l spacer to bring them closer to her. Paul |
