The auto recline to manual recline backdate
Here is my prototype set of seat hinges. Probally overkill. I might produce sets in aluminum as these are almost too stout. I'll show them on my car at the SLC Parade

Aluminum seat hinges
Here is a full set of seat hinges I'm working on. I've added a 3rd hole on the upper to give finer adjustments. The lazer cut pieces come with edges that are a little rough. I talked to a couple people and they say you get about the same results with water jeting. Has anyone heard something different? The only power tools I have are a drill and a dremel tool. I had to borrow a drill press to countersink the holes. The steel ones currently on my drivers seat don't have countersunk holes. I have 5 or 6 hours of hand labor so far (mostly smoothing out the edges) and I think I'll have about 10 to15 hours in them when I'm done. I'm going to have the head shaved on the bolts to give them a flatter look.
I can have these cut in either Aluminum or Steel. Someone could drill a bunch of holes to give them a racer look? The steel ones could be chromed to give them a more orginal look. This has been a fun project. It would be interesting to see how many ways people would finish these off. These should fit cars to 1973. The center hole on the upper would need to be left out on the later cars. They should fit the later 356's also. Chris Last edited by cmpski; 09-20-2012 at 07:57 PM.. |

These are a cool looking piece, and I think people will be interested in them. I would like something like this for my VW Recaro seats when I recover them so I don't have to use to cracking fading plastic overed hinges.

You might consider some type of grinding wheel/buffer that will knock the edges off fairly quickly. They are not expensive and will save you a ton of time and effort .

This hinge is almost done. The bolt will be milled flat to look some what like the 356 hinge.

I'm looking into it. Are enough people interested, what will they be willing to pay for them, and can I make them for that price and make a profit. What is my legal exposure. I will probally put a add in Excellence in a couple months to find out what interest is out there.

Close up shots. Round anf flat hardware. They weigh 2lbs each or 4lbs per seat in aluminum with all hardware. My factory hinges with crossbar weigh 7 1/2lbs.

Simple Yes! Inexpensive NO!
I know at first glance these look simple. When you factor my design time, (couple hours) with compound curve manual tools. My time with the CAD guys, (couple hours). Paying for prototype lazered pieces in aluminum and steel, (the holes have to be perfect or the seatback will be twisted), 15 to 20 hours of hand labor, new seats might have been less expensive. But then it's been that way with the whole car. Chris Last edited by cmpski; 09-04-2012 at 10:00 AM.. |

Here is a little flatter bolt head. If these go into production they will be finished even nicer. It will take 25 sets to go to production. The thru bolt will look similar but be of a much better design and made custom for this application. They will sell for about $995.00 for both front seats.
No splines to deal with. You can have a touring and sport or his and hers seatbacks and change them out in 5 minutes. And the seatback stays where you put it.

I sent an email.to you...just saw the price.....wow.....
I think I'll try and make my own set...water jet cut..... I'll just have to spend a little time doing the cad drawing..... probably scan the original parts for dimensions. I'd have to C & C them to make more than one set.......at a reasonable price Nice work.....@ $250.00/$300.00 a set of two they might sell at $1K......good luck out of my price range Best you keep them as a one off item to match the build quality of your car .....which is very impressive

As I don't have a water jet or lazer in my garage I have to use someone elses. I have over $2,000 and a lot of time invested in prototypes and cad work. An now your gonna rip off my design. Thanks. The #'s you quote won't even cover my costs based on the quality of manufacture I would be using. These are crude mostly had finished prototypes. The finished product would be MUCH nicer.

Chris, it was great to spend time with you at the 912 Registry Cambria event, it was fun! And... thank you for stopping by our shop today, it gave me a chance to spend more time looking at the recliners that you made for your '67; I think they are great and it will be a good way to fix that bothersome problem of recliner malfunction. I am very interested in adding them to our line of products.
looking forward to seeing you again soon Agustin Vidaurri Autos International 760 737 3565 ![]() ![]()

Price points for the seat hinges/reclines
I have been working on a lower price for the seat hinge/recliner. Upper and lower for both seats. Water jetted to a fine edge.
A stainless steel thru bolt you shape like you want. Washers and nuts. 2 or 3 hole upper. $375.00. If I do the polishing. $450.00 You supply the 3/8 inch pins by 3/4 inch long of your choice. Here is my source. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-quick-release-pins/=jnz5v3 Use the hardware off your seats. Here is a source for new hardware. 911 / 356 Porsche Parts | Porsche, Wurth and Fuchs Wheels | Sierra Madre Collection Here are a few pictures. The pictures are of lazered not water jetted pieces. One is of the Scotch pads I used for 10 minutes to smooth part of a upper. One is of that upper. One is of 8 pieces to do your car, minus the seat angle pins. You supply the pins and hardware. I will set up a area on my website to show your finished pieces. Chris Pomares cpomares@wwdb.org These are patient pending. *Pompolo Design Works - Home page I need 25 sets to do a run. I need only 8 more. Attached Images ![]() ![]() ![]()

Did these ever go into any production? My '68 has auto reclining seats, so for now I have them out of the car... and I''d rather not continue to use these ugly SC seats.
Let me know. Thanks Trevor |
