Barn(s) Find(s) - Treasure or Trash
OK, So let the opinions fly. If I didn't value (mostly) the experience found on this forum, I wouldn't be so readily open to hear what those who reply have to say! So here goes. I found these on the Central Coast of the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia a few weeks ago. I doubt they had seen the light of day for well over 20 years. I boxed everything up and had it shipped home to the Midwest. Cars arrived yesterday. I'm in a quandry as to what to do; restore (if so, which one(s)?/hotrod or speedster project(s)/sell, or? Before chiming in please note that the 911's are sans engines and transmissions. Here's what ended up coming home to Kansas; 1967 911T Targa (missing paint code id) / 1968 911E Targa (orig Lime Green) / 1965 912 Coupe (409th built and orig Light Ivory. The roughest one too) / 1968 912 Targa (orig Bahama Yellow) & a 1969 912 Coupe (orig Slate Grey). Still trying to figure out (since ALL eng/trans' are out of the cars) whether or not I have the matching eng/trans' on the 912's. I think I do on the '65. Also included were 9 engines (7-912's/356's and 2-1950's VW's), 4 transmissions + tons of misc parts/pieces. What would you do?

Definitely a treasure...what a haul!
If those are as rust free as they appear to be in those pics, I would list them individually on eBay rather than to spend your life parting them out little by little. Europeans (and those living in the US rust belt) love rust free shells like this to restore their rusty ones, and they browse American eBay and Craigslist looking for shells like those. The 912 and 356 engines are pretty valuable too...particularly the 356 blocks. I would post the 356 engine block numbers up here on Pelican, Rennlist, and the 356 registry and see if they can be matched to anyone's car. They would be very valuable to make a 356 numbers matching. Good 912 engine cores are hard to find too. I think you are 1 year off on your 911s...often the titles on these old cars show the production year instead of model year, particularly if they were Euro market cars later imported to the USA. The yellow Targa pictured is a long wheelbase (you can tell by the torsion bar hole...there is a bigger gap between the hole and the rear wheelwell) which means it is a '69. The green 911 Targa appears to be a '68 or '69 (has the door handles unique to that year). EDIT: has the smaller horn grill openings, so I think it's a '69 too. Good luck, and congrats on your find! Jay, Yhx. Unfortunately the '65 is rusted through the pans - BAD... but anything is restorable with enough money!

Wow! First thing I would do is celebrate (depending on the cash outlay)
![]() Your yellow 68 Targa appears to be a 69. (you can see the battery boxes up front)

Cornpanzer, Yes you are correct, it is a '69 - my mistake. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hey I just turned this
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() into this ![]() ![]() ![]() Anything's possible, and there is probably somebody out there who would like to try. Don't deny him/her the opportunity by pulling these cars apart before seeing if you can sell them for restoration. I did mine pretty much by myself and the car is worth much more than the cost of restoring it (excluding my time of course). Not quite finished yet, but nearly there. I will be the second driver after a NYS doctor, and the first time it will have been on the road since 1977. Details here if thou have a couple of hours to spare ..... ![]() DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker • View topic - 66 LHD 'Doctors Car' restoration begins Mick |

Jay, The vin on the yellow targa is 11870138 and you were also correct on the green targa being an 1969.

First congratulations on large barn find. Second '67 would be a normal or S and '68 had no E (E started in '69). But those are minor points. The thing to start with is to list all vin#'s to see exactly what you have, then do the same with the engine #'s. Next clean each of the tubs and assess the condition and completless of each. Make notes on what is missing on each tub. Inventory all the boxed parts and match to suspect original car.
At this point you will have idea of which prospect is the best candidate for revival. This could be either as original or a hot rod. You will also have an idea what could be sold to finance your projects. Keep in mind the cost of each element of the process rust repair, paint and body, mechanical, interior, electrical, trim and finish items. Each of these elements have a range from driver quality to concours standards. You have a interesting journey of discovery and transformation, best of luck and enjoy it. btw keep posting as you progress. |

MTemp, Extremely nice job. I do not have the time, experience or expertise necessary to do this without a lot of help. I do have the ability to fund the restorations if I choose to go that route, if it makes sense - wait, does any of this makes sense with these machines!?!

I reckon that what will happen to these cars largely depends on what the intentions were in purchasing them in the first place... But the cars will either be restored or dismantled depending on a number of factors such as time, finances, wrench experience, etc. So, were they bought to be restored (in which case, it will take a considerable amount of time and there's several of them) or to be resold to others?

11870138 is a 1968 911T Targa which was only available in Europe that year (US got 911 and 911L). It should be a short wheelbase car...very odd that the car has the long wheelbase quarter panels, and it appears to have the dashboard from a '72 or '73. Might be a wreck that was rebuilt with newer parts, or the victim of a VIN swap...very strange.

OK,
That's kind of wild. I used to own a RHD 1965 912 in light ivory (definitely not the same car). I sold it for way too cheap. If you've got the numbers matching engine with it (do not separate it!!!) that car even as it sits could pay the price to restore one of the other cars. I'm really jealous right now. I want back into a longhood really badly right now and if I found a stash like that I would sell my soul...

I would start by getting one of them on the road and blowing the corn dust off of those Kansas highways; the rest will come to you.

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering this. How did you find them?

Thanks Guys for the input so far. It is entirely possible that some of these may have cobbled together over the years. Does anyone know of anybody in the Kansas City area that might be able to assist me in determining exactly what I have?

You could cross post to the 911S Register. Get some feedback there too.
Just a thought. Sharon
