Speaker replacement
I am going to replace the speakers (and receiver) in my 89 911. I do not want to cut any part of the openings, just replace them with like sized. I am not an audiophile, so a basic setup is more than adequate. I was looking at Crutchfield and they only list 73-86 for sizes of speakers and they do not list the tweeters.
Two questions: 1. What sizes are the tweeter, lower door speaker, and the rear speakers? 2. Can they just be unscrewed, unplugged, and then plug in the new ones provided I buy the same size? I had read another post on removing tweeter and I checked it out and it appeared to be easy enough with no door panel removal. (I guess this assumes no wires need to bre replaced, but the current ones all work and sound is emitted from them all so I expect to use the existing wiring).

PDA, if my memory serves me, the tweeters are something like 2 3/4", and the woofers are 5 3/8". Rod Birch at caraudioinnovations.com would be able to tell you. Actually, anyone there would.
I found my speakers -- I'm running Focal Polyglass 165K 5 3/8" or 5 1/4" components in the front doors, and the Kenwood 4675 duals in the rear deck. I'll check once more to make sure, but I'm pretty sure those are they. Again, Rod would know what system I'm talking about. He's great with questions, answered a bunch of mine before I put down any money, and even then, I'm nowhere near one of his heavy hitters, but he still speaks to me about every little question I have. Can't recommend them highly enough. Jared

PDA,
Hope you could take another look at what you are planning. You may not be an audophile but one addition to the system that really is worth it is a external amplifier. I had a very nice Kenwood system in my car and liked it. Listened to another car with a amp and it was heads and shoulders better, especially in the bass response. Bought a small amp (180 amps) and put it under the pax seat and the change is substancial. Am not into real loud or wild music but it really changed the quality of the sound. From the outside you cannot tell the amp is there... until I turn the stereo on that is! Even at low levels the difference is dramatic. Joe

Thanks for the tip. I was looking at some amps and will probably do the same thing (under the passenger seat). I was trying to save some cash and do the speaker install myself and hence my purchase from crutchfield to save on price as opposed to the local Sound Advice or Best Buy. Did you change out your speakers? Was wondering if the sizes were as listed above?

5.25 in the doors and 4x6 in the rear deck if you want to drop them in. Most seperate tweeters will fit in the stock grilles.
Ebay is the way to go once you figure out exactly which model you want. Ebay sellers should be about half price compared to Crutchfield.

Do the rears drop in or go in from under? I need to look back there, but I do not remember them appearing that you could drop in from the top. Thought I saw a post on it but cannot find it. I have an 89 911 (not the C4). I am willing to pay more for NEW and with warranty or is the stuff on Ebay new that you are referring to? Thanks for the measurments.

Most electronics are available new from ebay vendors.
Lots of company's use ebay as a marketing tool. Still half price over the stores and other mail order company's. Warranties are a little tricky with ebay as some manufacturers only honor the factory warranty if the product is sold by a authorized dealer - but at half price it maybe worth the risk! To install rear speakers remove the rear shelf by removing 4 screws. Lift up shelf, unhook the speaker wires, remove the shelf and unbolt the factory speakers which will probably be in horrible condition - the paper cones on mine were gone. The new speakers will bolt right up - might require longer bolts and nuts as the factory used clips. Some rear speakers are a little deeper than the factories- so measure your originals than try to find a set which is similar in depth - specs for speakers detail this dimension.

PDA,
I purchased on Ebay and got the full factory warranty. Went a bit overboard on the rear speakers so that info is N/A for you, but fronts are Blaupunkt (normal size) with tweeters that overlap the normal hole a bit but use the same size opening. You can do it piece by piece and install the system without the amp and later wire in an amp. I just wanted to give you a heads up that its well worth putting an amp in the system for the sound quality. GR8 is correct that the depth is sometimes a problem on the rear speakers. Check before buying rears... Joe
