A cheap part and I can send him my spare coil from my tool box fo' free- yes there is still a chance - but my left nut on the chopping block says no. This brings back memories of my P-tune failures - The Horror............The Horror.......

Alright guys, thanks for all of the help and I will be in the market for an msd 6al correct? I saw online there's a 6al2 or something along those lines. Strictly the 6al?

Looked on permatune's site, looks like they are selling black ignition boxes. They are smaller as well compared to my permatune. Mine also looks a little larger and is sort of goldish color. If that means anything.

The 6AL2 has a built in rev limiter vs having to buy separate RPM pills (plug in units that limit revs). Summit racing has a rebate for $25. Not sure about Pelican. Looks like the 6AL2 is a little smaller and that may make mounting easier.

Same rebate for the 6AL.
looks like the new 6AL has a rev limiter built in as well.

Bob,

I misread his earlier post. Thought he put a new MSD and Blaster 2 coil in, which then died on his father. Apparently he only put a new coil in.

Agreed it's classic Permatune failure.

Ok the 6al it is. Guess the 6al2 has a two step rev limiter?...

Again, thanks for the input and help on diagnosing.

Paul, I read it that way too first time thru. My comment should have been in green - was just being a cock-sure stinker vs trying to be mean. Apologies.

Just looked that up. It's for drag racing. Something about the launch RPM tied into the transmission. Suspect you won't need that. Good eye.

As T77911S mentioned there is a coated copper coil about the size of an old silver dollar (1/2" thick) in your distributor that can fail. It picks up the collapsing magnetic field as the stator spins inside the reluctor and triggers the CD box through the green wire. I will send you my spare if you want to trouble shoot this possibility. You may have to remove your distributor as the green wire plugs into the side of the coil and that wire fastener is not positioned for easy access. It is not a frequent failure point.

I'll take it to my Porsche mechanic and have him run through it if it were possibly something more serious or something that I wouldn't want to get into myself.
