Awesome Ron. Forgive me for getting all mushy and ****, but, I've always thought that eulogies were badly timed when they were given at funerals. I figure if people have all these great things to say, how come the guy that they are talking about never hears it?? Makes little sense to me.
So, I'm gonna break that deal/tradition/rule, and tell you, Ron, that you are a model for living life (or cheating death?) to the fullest.
You're teaching me, (and I suspect others on this site as well) how to handle some big bumps in the road.
Thankyou.

In spite of all the hardships you're contending with Ron, I really hope you and your wife have a happy Thanksgiving.

Ron, good to see ya back on line & posting.

Ya know, Jake said it too well for me to add much. Lots of fond memories from your time here...they won't be forgotten.

Hoping for more...yeah, I am.

Godspeed Ron.

Greetings

The Smokies at the N.C. / Tenn border areas is quite pristine and remarkably a wow factor it its ability to be just as it was 300 years ago.

If you don't mind foot hiking for a few hours you can find real fly fishing. This is not a secret. The secret is in finding the guys who do it. They are few even on a nice weekend.

If I was the kind of guy who was amazed to be in such proximity to such beauty I would jump of at an area called Robinsonville. [or something sounding like it] It's up there in the hills and within 50 miles of where you would start exploring. There is a Natl'l Forest close by and many rangers close by to get you started.

Even if you're not a forest nut with the old growth and animals there is a local need to fish out the non-native trout from private lands. There is no fee to fish privately from the owners they just want the Brown Trout out. There is a big gas station that will cater to flies and baits. I posted this info when the east coast pelicanheads had a 911 meet in 2006 at Dragon Tail. I meet Borrag there in Early Nov for the first time. That gas station is a silver dollar to find. It's worth searching out on the east side of the smokies.

If you want nice Dragon Trail type action without the tourist style crowds it's up and easily found up in the Robinsonville areas.
I have more info on another computer.

When I met Ron, he was worried about the locals, cause he kept hearing banjo's playing. I told him I was travling in mufti, and that if he kept his mouth shut and didn't say nothing, I'd do the talking, and we'd be fine. So we rode around all day Friday checking stuff out with the top down.
We camped below Ron on the lake, and liked to froze our hoo ha's off!
Remember how we couldn't find Ron when we were taking the group pics at the dam and there was a car across the river at the camp ground?
Ron found a hot shower there, and was apparently washing, shaving and playing with his rubber duckie while we were striking poses wid the porches.
Frankly, I think that was a better use of his time, cause he was beginning to smell real bad. The only consolation was that he was sleeping down wind from us with the camping-for-jesus crowd.
Any way, he showed up after the saturday t.o.d. run after dark with a bag of col. sanders finest. I thought he had crashed the PCA party for sat supper, but he said they kicked him out. We had found some fresh possum road kill and was stewing it over the fire, so we let him stay with us for the rest of the evening.
He was scared to go back to his camp site cause some of the good ole boys two sites down from his, who had spent all day praying for him, because of his being a Yankee and all. They also spoke a different vernacular than he did. There was a preacher with them who was packing a .45 automatic (for them backsliders) who said there might be hope cause yankees (especially this one) never reached the age of accountability.
We did up a mess of meat, potatoes, carrots, and onions in tin foil in the fire, and topped it off with a bold merlot, and followed that with a nice dessert wine and cigars. Swapped more lies, 'til late then went to bed.
Life is good.
Drove back home with the top down.
I'll add pics later when I get it figured out...........

I left metro on Tues 3am. Bored $hitLess on I-81 in Vir around 10am i'm passing a town called "Woodstock". WTF, i won't be late for the weekend meet. Spent a few hrs checking it out. [Worth the layover.] Back on I-81 s till it's time to dive into the Smokies via I-40. I wind up at a town called Waynesville in NC. It's somewhere around 12 mid and I might as well top off. The bs ride s is over and i'm in a good mood. I'm in no hurry while making coffee, hanging, etc.
I start talking with a 40yr town local named Bill that's my exact age. I could dial the conversation as 2 college age boomers talking the same attitude they had in the early 1970's at school. I don't leave this guy for a few hours. It was daybreak. I'm out of metro and became dialed in to NC, somewhat.

His area has great native trout fishing and it's accessaable if you want to hunt for fish or hire a guide. I knew the Smokie's forest was nice but now i was wising up.. nice

Only a few hr's later I'm almost at the intersection of my Hy 19/23 and Hy 28N to Fontana and more nice forest.. Top off again for entertainment 5mi before intersection.

Again.. I'm into hanging till the weekend.
The gas station has a bait and tackle section. It's early am and local customers are stopping by. Bang, I get excited over the bait and tackle sec. Within 15min i was involved with locals for 5-15min at a time. The 2 owners and me were entertained with each other. They let me take pictures etc.
IMO great fishing areas, great custom flies, great selection of lures stacked on the shelves from most productive at top till less at bottom. A big welcome to fish out the introduced Brown trout as fast as possible. About 3hrs later i leave for the ranger station up north.

The Place is called Smoky Mountain Bait & Tackle. I newbie could spend $200-500 there and have a decent foundation.

I took pics of the isles and custom fly box in big bits/kb. My bud up here makes his own flies and flipped over the pics.

Then while doing pics outside I spot a local female also hanging for some reason.

Anyway.. I've seen many forests. The Smokies are among the best.

Ron in bed (sick or down in the dumps?), hard to breath, not speaking.
Maryanne (the sainted woman who puts up with his sorry ass) said he's no longer on computer--Send me e-mails: I will forward to her e-mail and she can read to him.
don't count him out yet----keep posting here too--he's one crustyassed somebi*ch, and if there's one thing for sure about Ron, he don't do what people expect him to to.

Madaio, git your sorry ass out of that bed!
You can rest later!

Ron -- engine off

Hi, I'm not a regular here but have been a friend of Ron's for 46 years and know that he'd want his Porsche buddies on Pelican Parts to be updated relative to this lengthy thread.

I just got a call from his wife Marianne. Ron Madaio passed away at home at approximately eight this morning. Since Monday, he had 24-hour hospice nursing care, and Marianne was with him when he died.

For anyone geographically close enough and so inclined, there will be visitation at Macken Mortuary at 52 Clinton Avenue in Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY 11570 tomorrow and Friday. Ron's funeral service will be Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m., St. Ignatius Martyr R.C. Church in Long Beach. See link: http://www.mackenmortuary.com/obituary/Ronald-E-Madaio/Long-Beach-NY/1154599

Ron, 64, was a volunteer firefighter since he was 18 (which is when and where we first met.) Ron's wish was for his cremains to eventually be propelled via the deck gun of his engine company out into a nearby ocean channel. As he was also an avid and accomplished diver, and as you know an unconventional individual in all respects, this seems very fitting . . . and something which should bring a smile to those of you who corresponded with him and know his iconic way of telling a story.

I hope that you will have a good thought for Marianne, and that you will join me in holding Ron with us for awhile longer by keeping him fondly in your memory.

Eric
