What to do while the engines out of the car?
My drivetrain's coming out this winter to refresh some of the transaxle synchros and pop in a new clutch. My car's an 84 with 64k miles, and the engine is bone dry right now...but...I hope to not drop the engine again for a loooooooooooong time.
Even though I have no oil leaks, I will have access...so...should I replace some of the oil seals as preventative maintenance, and if so, which ones? (What else would you guys do with the engine out of the car?) Please use small words as I'm not yet the 3.2 guru I hope to soon become. Thanks! Rich |

do the main crank seal while the clutch is out.
do the 'holy trinity'---the oil temp sender, the thermostat gasket and the crankcase breather cover gasket, middle of the motor at the rear. check all hoses, I found a few sources of vacuum leaks. you might want to check all the fuel injector seals and clamps....and clean everything, valve adjustment, etc

30 years old and only 64k miles. (2k miles per year) I wouldn't do much of anything if it ain't leaking. Its certainly not being driven much so just do the clutch.
Change the oil maybe.

Just get in there an clean, clean, clean anything that's dirty. You have the perfect opportunity to inspect the rear brake lines for corrosion too! I know my banana's
and the rest of the rear suspension were very dirty ( I mean black!) but of course my car is earlier and was neglected for years. HTH, Cheers! Steve

Engine Pad, definitely. Yours has probably broken down by now, and you can lose some weight with the new pads.

well it's been 2 years, the car has 68k miles, I rebuilt the entire suspension front and rear along with new shocks and t-bars (thanks elephant!!), new rotors, pads, calipers on all 4 corners, powdercoated most components while off the car, clutch cable, omega spring, fluids (oil, trans, brake), new dash and windshield (that was fun), and did a bunch of other stuff I'm not thinking of...it's all in my binder.
And now I'm FINALLY dropping the trans for the rebuild! I am very excited for this thing to shift the way it's supposed to. (Note that I also have added another child to our household, which is what's causing the delays) I'm still on the fence about replacing seals that aren't leaking, I think Im going to order them and make the call when I'm staring them in the face. |

Connect the radio and play "I'm going to the Led Zeppelin concert". That's what I did when waiting on my 56 bug rebuild back in 69. Jeez, we got baked and it never moved.

Best of luck my brotha, mine has been on an engine stand since June. Between the family, the job, daughter's gymnastics, time and money in general it just takes awhile to get everything back together. Especially when you're working on something and you get inspired to take those extra steps to make whatever it is just that much nicer. It doesn't make that particular item any better and no one will notice the difference but because your did whatever it was, it matters and makes all the difference in the world. Believe me, there are a lot of us out there that can't wait to get their cars running again. You are not alone!

Yes. My weapon to battle inertia is that I am taking a week off, completely, to do nothing but work on the car. That should get me to the point where the only thing left to do is bolt engine to trans, reinstall, and drive away.
The best laid plans... |

Just thought I'd close the loop on this. Car is back together. 1k miles on it since the work was done. Runs beautiful. No leaks. Shifts great. Burning very little oil. Valves are quiet.
I think my car is driving better than when it left the factory. It feels amazing. Thank heavens for this forum. Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk |
