Hey, I'll never deny that about the SC engine. If reliability is the goal, they are hard to beat...even with a small block Chevrolet V-8...which IMHO is another genius engine design.
Now to the list. Also in my OPINION, the 356 notchback coupe should be dropped from the list...and replaced with the 924. The Cayenne? In my opinion, it sucks....but as far as status symbol sports utes go, it's in the running... If that's where Porsche management cares to go, it's their right to do so. I haven't been invited to any of their board meetings. My rights as a consumer are another thing.

YESSSS, my car is second on this ****ker's list and I don't give a *****.
I like having one of the most malign engines (the notorious 2.7) from Stutgart in my '74 911. The more people say that it is a bad powerplant the better. The more they hate it, the more I love it. Fact is that my baby has never let me down, is real fun to drive and never fails to amaze me with its timeless beauty. Underdogs will eventually rule the world!!!!! greetings, G

Hey! My first car at 16 was a 924. Perfect for a hormonal teenager learning to drive. It was dirt cheap to buy and maintain, kept me at reasonable speeds, the handling was a dream and taught me the cornering methods I use to this day.
It was a car for those who aspired to a REAL Porsche, but couldn't afford one yet. Finally at 29 I bought my 911! |

Hey, my 77 2.7 is on the list TWICE, as 2nd and 10th, because it's also a Sportomatic.

My 2.7S motor lasted 26 years and 165,000 miles. Ran great and very smooth for a very long time, Jerry

My 74 2.7 S isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It has an 11 blade fan and hi perf exhaust stock [no thermal reactors], and of course has been upgraded to Carrera tensioners. It still handles well. It looks good. It weighs about 2500lbs, and I can't say that about a 996 Turbo.

the top ten list is a little off i would say. althought the 917 turbo was awesome it destroyed an entire class of racing. the 956/962 has won le mans more times than most makes have won le mans period. is that not the ultimate test of engineering? as far as 996's making the list i wonder why the GT3 is not on there, it is obviously the best reincarnation Stuttgart can come up with of an RS type car. I also believe the 935 should have made the list seeing as it won le mans and was one of the few GT class cars to win the race outright. no need to go on and on and on, just look at the cars the editors drive, that speaks for itself.
as far as the cars that should not have been built. i think we all agree on the cayenne, aside from all suffering head gasket problems they are an SUV, enough said. we all love what we drive, we have no need for affirmation from a magazine telling us whether we are right or not. da$& the torpedoes, full speed ahead!!!

Did they ask the drivers of each of these cars how much sex they had?

I don't agree with the decision of putting the 944s on that list. That's one cool car. Same weight and body of the normal 944 but with a 16v 2.5 that makes 190hp instead of the 158 that the normal 8v makes.

i don't get it, everybody knows the '73 911 S targa is supposed to be #1 on the best Porsche ever built list... no point argueing about it... it just is...

... actually the dreaded mid-year 2.7's have (had) a really good power curve. It's probably the least "peaky" 911 engine I've driven (so far).

hmm, were does the highly ahead of its time 1989 Porsche 959 Rank on the 100 greatest list? That car was said to have been 5 years ahead of almost every other super car. and it was only a 2.8L.

Well I can't believe a 959 and no 993's were not in the top 10.
I thought the 959 or 73 911 RS or 550 spyder would have been vying for top position.

Nothing like Dr. Wienerking's stodgy, passionless, beancounterish philosophy to throw a big steaming turd on Porsche's shining laurels garnered through 50 years of racing developement and dedication to sports cars... Why bother to develop a better entry-level sports car when we can cast aside Porsche's heritage, history, soul and passion for a few quick bucks by cashing in on the latest (retarded) fad? After all, it's all just about making money, isn't it? ianc

WHAT are you gentlemen so work up about ??!!!
I know FOR A FACT that the list was compiled by Peter Morgans aunt on a tea party with a small crowd of similarly nice old ladies. Neither of them can drive with a manual gearbox and they have shady romantic memories of the glory days of Porsche racing but would rather drive a new Volvo. Give it a rest. BTW I think the magazine articles are quite well written most of the time. HOWEVER - in terms of useful information and knowledge their is NO SUBSTITUTE for this grand forum.
