Cool 3.2 Conversion - The Final Chapter.

Well by now everyone is tired of seeing these posts . . . but too bad.

The main reason for this post is to thank fellow Pelicanites Doug E, Richard LeSchander, Dave Riley, Jim Richards, Justin Fisher, ChrisL, & soon to be Pelicanites Chris Martin, & Tom.

The day had some bumps, but everybody stayed in the game and the conversion is an oil cooler and fuel pump installation away from being on the road.

It was a great day spent with the best of people.

Thanks to all.

Oh yea the home page has been updated with some surprizes that only became evident as the install progressed.

Lots of fun and always new things to learn. You mentioned something about getting heat hooked up on your web page. What's the issue? Sorry I couldn't stay while you installed the SSI's. I look forward to seeing you and your 911S+ back on the road.

Let me know if you need any help with the cooler once you get it.

BTW, we should be thanking you for the working laboratory

Updated web page looks good.

Chris - have you defected or are you maintaining dual membership? BTW, thanks again for the idea about cleaning the oil cooler. When I checked mine last night she was clean as a whistle.

Glad to hear the oil cooler was clean, when I cleaned mine it was a messy job to say the least! As for the dual membership, we'll see how it goes. Assuming I buy most of my parts here anyway...

Forgot to ask.............did you do the conversion to the DME pressured fuel pump ?
If so, did you change out the lines ? Or just adapt the banjo end ?

Justin -

Nice pics! Can you e-mail me the one of my car by itself (the one with the nose of Richard's truck just visible)? Thanks.

Just to set the record straight, Justin's pictures showing us all standing around were taken during "very brief" breaks in the action to discuss the next steps in the 3.2 installation. No, really!

If you only use the car during the "warm" months, the hoses from the exchangers to the heater boxes give you a little bit of heat. Yes, connecting the rear of the exchangers to the blower assy. atop the motor like OEM exhaust of course gives you much more. But like you said, it requires some creativity. Good luck and great job so far!

The first pic looks like the car is on a lift. Geez it is jacked up high. Was it necessary to jack it so high to use your ATV jack and pallet technique?

Nonetheless, good job.

Marc,

Thanks again - had a great time. Sorry I had to leave early, but I left you in what seemed like good hands. Also, thanks to Justin for the great pics.

See you guys soon,

Chris.

Justin:

Thanks for the great pictures while I was distracted. I'm going to add a few (with proper credit of course) to the home page to fill in some holes.

Cary:

So far all of the fuel fitting have fit with minor changes to fuel filter, and return line fitting (see home page). I have not got to the front yet, but David Waits has made a nice AN adaptor, (I know that you don't do adaptors) but I can live with it since there are 2 hose clamps down there anyway. I have the DME fuel pump to install because of the flow pressure difference. With my engine bay mods, there are no hose clamps for the fuel system, just good ole Porsche metric fittings.

Paul:

What we found after doing Richard's clutch was that the rear bumper had to 3' off the ground so that we could work the motor and trans with jack without any chance of contact between the engine and body.

Thanks again to all who helped out. Hopefully I will be turning the key in about two weeks.

Lookin good ...................I wish I could see what the real end of the 77 return fuel line looks like.
Yours sounds like you have it done real sanitary.

On the adapter issue. I get real anal when it comes to connections that I can't easily see. Personal problem.
The problem with the DME conversion is the size of the banjo fittings. They're different sizes. Then on top of that, try to incorporate the check valve.
But I know JW says there are adapters to do it. But not something I want to do mail order or over the phone. I don't have that good of luck.
Let me know what you finally end up with. With all the help you have, you guys will figure it out.

Great work on the documentation. YOU DONE GREAT.

To reduce the amount you need to lift the rear of the car for an engine removal, take off the rear bumper!!!!!! Five easy steps:

1. Remove little black plugs from bumper strips and remove philips head screws. These are kinda stubborn somtimes, so the dreaded drill may be needed. Upon reinstallation, use anti-seize on screws! Pull end of bumper strip out of bumperette.

2. Disconnect wires from license plate lights in the black, jumbo bumperettes. Pull wires thru grommets

3. Remove 8mm nylock nuts and washers from rearmost end of bumper bellows/accordions (2 nuts per accordion) inside bumper area. Pull end of accordion out of bumper itself.

4. With bumper strips partially detached the big M8 nuts are visible. Remove 4 M8 nuts and jumbo washers.

5. Yank bumper off impact shock absorbers.

Sounds like kind of a pain, but I say the less you have to lift the car, the better.

Kevin, it seems like removing the rear bumper is more work for what, to me, seems like little or no reward. Since I'm still a novice in these matters, what's the downside of jacking the rear of the car up 30" - 36" to obtain clearance as we did on Marc's and Richard's cars? Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this!
