In recent car work, I re-assembled my front suspension and found a concern/question.
One of my a-arms has the end cap (front of tube) removed. You can see through the torsion bar tube of the a-arm. During reassembly, I accidentally pushed my torsion bar partway out the front. Next, I tried putting the rear cap/adjuster on first, then pushing it into place. My question is, what keeps the bar from working its way forward, out of the rear side end cap? I realize that most of the time, the suspension has load on it. But, in racing, and say after a curb hop, I expect the suspension to become unloaded. Maybe the sway bars prevents the torsion bar from fully unloading. Perhaps in a jump situation where both front tires were unloaded would do it? I've raced for several years with at least one a-arm missing its end cap without trouble, but thoughts I'd ask. |

Are you talking about missing this cap?
If so, then yes, your torsion bar can move. This cap needs to be removed in order to pull the torsion bar. You MUST have this cap on the car before you drive it.

Scooter, no I have the cap. The cap is on the rear side of the torsion bar and a-arm.
My question is, what keeps the bar from sliding forward (out of the cap) towards the front of the car? The cap does not attach with other than friction to hold it in place. |

The front cap is a disc that is pressed in and usually staked. They do come out if you hit them hard with a hammer. sometimes torsion bars are so stuck you have to move them forward to push off the cap so you can then drive them back out the other side.
Just hammer the cap back into place. I have never seen one come out on its own.

I had the same question a couple of years ago and I was told (which makes sense) that once the weight of the car is on the suspension (i.e., wheels on the ground), the torsion bars won't move. They can move forward and back a bit when the car is lifted.
