While I'm in the door panel, things to do...
I'm looking to swap my stock door panels to the AppBiz RSA versions, and I was just wondering if there were any suggestions for things to do while I'm in the door.

Grease the window lift drive gear and touch a few spots along the sprocket with same.
Not sure of the best grease for this. Regulator channels, window channels. Check condition of those white nylon lock units for the linkage rods. Replacing all would not be a crime but if it ain't broke, why fix it. However, I bet the internal door handle units take more stress than the others.

Stig,
I made some nice RS style panels for really cheap, I would be happy to help you if you wanted to make them your self here is the thread that documents it http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/647055-rs-style-door-pannels-fiberglass-project.html I also greased the little plastic bits on all the mechanisms and even replaced a few of the cracked ones. Other than that there really is not much in there. I also put some grease on the hand crank window parts. Regards Dave

I'd say make sure the weep holes in the bottom of the door are free of any debris.
Could have a broken spring retainer. I had some problems with my power windows (assuming your 85 has power windows) turned out a small spring retainer had fallen off in each door. Last edited by cabmandone; 06-26-2014 at 02:55 PM.. |

By spring retainer, are you talking about that pot metal post that holds the window clock spring in place?

And on that note, which Weltmeister replacement pin is right for '85 electric windows? Or was it a random grab bag of regulators at the factory?

How are your door stays? Might consider the reinforcement kit.

While I'm in there, I always clean the weep holes along with the seam in the bottom where the door bottom and door skin come together. Maybe lightly sand the areas and apply POR-15 there and the bottom inside of the doors. My car is a '69 so rust is always a concern and water can collect in the bottom of the doors & cause rust. The seams between the door bottom & door skin had a tar like material in them which had deteriorated. Could be they did something better for your '85.

That's a good thought. I have a good bit of 3M butyl tape from all the BMW window regulators I've done over the years and some extra 3M strip caulk from my upcoming Koni strut project. Quote:
In terms of the RSA door panels, the AppBiz kit on this site comes covered in vinyl already correct? It's just a matter of cutting out the holes for the window switches and such? |

When I did my RSA panels I just called AppBiz and talked to Bob. There is no need for cutting. You just tell him what you have -- electric window switches, speakers, etc and he will send you the correct setup. He even metal reinforcements for the switch holes so they just snap into place.

To be honest, it never even crossed my mind to search for one. I figure the repair I did would last for my lifetime and probably the lifetime of the next owner which I hope is my son.
