If your printer can do it, Polycarbonate is what you want to print these parts out of. I still have to make a cabinet to contain the heat for my printer before I test it out.

I may be limited to ABS Carbon due to temps needed for Polycarbonate but the ABS Carbon looks like it would work for tail lights.

I found this filament supplier website that has a lot of information: https://www.3dxtech.com/

EDIT: I just realized my printer came with a second extruder for higher temp printing so I'll give PC Carbon a try.

you may also check the work from Francoi in France (Instagram: 3dclassic_fr).

he does steering wheel pucks, momo horn buttons, taillights, etc.

That’s some really nice work, thanks for the link!

I like the look of the R taillights but I think the large LED panels of the Spoke lights provide more safety so that’s the direction I’m going.

Has anyone tried using ASA material? It has a lot of the same properties as ABS but without the smell and warping. I have seen others make airboxes that survived the engine compartment as well as heavy long term sun exposure in a 140+ degree car interior.

I've been using 3DXTECH ASA material almost exclusively. It prints about the same as ABS and supposed to have better UV protection.

The 3D printed taillight housings I made are ASA. I should have my 930 on the road in the next week and then take it on a road trip in couple weeks for the housing's first real test.

Thank you for the update on your taillight housings and your inside on using ASA. I just received an all metal hot end and a roll of Polymax ASA to run some tests off with. I have been printing lots of fabrication tools and prototypes using PLA+ with great success. I found that having a 3d printer makes life a bit easier as I can make up all sorts of things to make my life easier or improve on something else. Anything I feel would be useful to others gets uploaded on Thingiverse.

Jonesb930, I like your collections on Thingiverse, like the large letters in the garage. I am putting links and downloadable stl files which are useful to the community on my web site. Can I put a your link above, in my Link section? Cheers Tom

Hey Tom,

Make sure you download the ones in my designs as I remixed the original's and increased the size as well as added mounting holes in the back. I even designed a hole template for proper spacing of the letters.

Neat stuff Bill.

I've used my 3D printer to mock up stuff I later make from metal. One item was the intake elbow from intercooler to throttle body. It's such a precise bend that it would have been a real pain to fab one in aluminum only to find out it was off by a little.

For those are worried about strength and heat resistant of plastics, they can 3D print aluminum and other metals too. Uprights, carb bodies, intake manifolds etc have been done

My process is to design it in Fusion360, print it in PLA to test fit and clearance, form and function. Once I am happy with the design I send it to a small run CNC shop to be made in the material of my choice. I initially used the option within Fusion360 (under the "Make" menu) to put it out to bid on 100garages.com. That is where I found a great small cnc shop in PA (www.maxmachining.com). I did get several cheep bids from Chinese shops with long lead times. I had quality control concerns there. The shop in PA was great! He was a car guy so he even helped with one of my designs using some of his experience. A few cad files back and forth and my parts were in the mail. Smooth transaction.

I am missing a pin for the mirror glass on my 78 outside mirror. I was thinking of having one 3d printed. I tried removing an existing one but it was pretty well glued. Does anyone have a file of this pin or know of a good place to look?

Cool thread!

In case it hasn't been mentioned already, for those of you printing parts that are going to be exposed to the sun, make sure you're material is UV stable or is coated accordingly. Many filaments and substrates rapidly diminish in sunlight because of the exposure. No implying that those of you printing don't know this, just stating it in case. I've been involved with many 3D printed projects (professionally and personally) over the years that took an unexpected hit from UV over time.

Good stuff! Keep it coming!

I realise I'm a bit late to this conversation but I've had some success in 3D printing a G-model tail light housing. My car has had 964 light buckets welded in (which I didn't want to remove as they actually provide superior protection against stones and debris) so off the shelve tail lights no longer fit. By no means a top-quality product but considering I'm new to the 3d printing I'm pretty happy.

I'm happy to share my drawings if needed!

Very nice print job and nice simple method of joining the two pieces.

I used ASA which is a UV-stable material that prints like ABS for my tail light housings

To be honest I haven't really given UV exposure any thought. Wouldn't coating the PLA with a rattle can provide sufficient UV protection?

I realised that the images I uploaded earlier were of an early prototype and, true to form, I haven't documented what the latest version looks like. Here is what it looks like in Fusion 360. The model is split in two to fit the build volume of my printer.

Because these housings were designed to fit a 964 housing the backside of the terminals are exposed (the 964 housing provides protection from the elements). It shouldn't take too much effort to design some sort of cover to protect them from any debris the wheels will throw at them.

I'll post the link to Printables once I've uploaded the models.

Very nice prints. One suggestion to increase running light output is to make the turnsignal be a dual filament BAY15D socket. This way you can have the brake and turnsignal dual operate as running lights like this one.

Here is my very simple 3D print job.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1125814-my-first-3d-print-project-my-911-a.html

I used a plastic that will withstand (or is supposed to) the heat of an interior of a car when the car is parked in the sun. I just installed it this week. I will have a car show and an autocross this weekend for a real test of it.
