Now I am drooling... a very nice place to work and nice toys.

Beautiful job and bet you cannot wait to keep making it better during the winter! Next time we get to Helena or Missoula might just drive up and visit!

Cary.... it looks fantastic! Something I'd like to do one day in the near future. If it's not too personnal, what's a set-up like this run, lift included? I completely understand if you want to keep the financial part of this venture under wraps, but if not, I'm sure we'd all like to know what it costs. Thanks again for the great updates, pictures and dreams you put in our heads. Enjoy! I like many others are obviously very envious

Just ran the numbers again last night. So far it looks like $21,500 without the lift. Lift at last chat, $2800. So $24,300.
I think I'm close, +/- $500.
But what you can't see from the pictures. Is the 12 * 28 attic above the 2 car door part. It's for all the stereo boxes, x-mas stuff and cold weather clothes.

Wayne, ask me about this sometime. I've helped install them before.

Cary, what a waste of money!

For $24,000 here in California you could have had a really great mailbox. With lights! And some very nice stonework. Really.

Doh!

I just put in a small backyard patio, some walkways, and some irrigation. It cost me $27,000!

If it wasn't really 81 F. today, I'd have a much easier time hating this place.

But there isn't much labor in the cost. $3000 in labor for the concrete. And probably $400 for setting the trusses.
DIY makes it pretty reasonable.

I'm being well coached. One of my friends is one of those contractors who build 7 figure homes. And his name isn't in the phone book.

I can call him on his cell anytime. And he'll walk me though an answer to a question I have. Plus, I use his suppliers with his pricing.

Amen brother. I visit Western Montana nearly every summer and wonder how I can live another year in california. Then around February I check the Montana weather report and I remember.

Besides, the people who live there work way too hard. I'd never fit in.

I remember one year in high school in Great Falls... I forgot to change my oil before it got cold. The oil in the block froze. I didn't get to start the car for 3 months. Even when it would start, I couldn't get the key in half the time because the locks were frozen. But, I LOVE Montana in the summer. Fishing on Rock Creek, just over the mountain from Cary in Stephensvile is heaven.

Moses,

I lived in Helena in 1997 and loved it but it did snow on 31 May and then again in late August that year...

Still love the place and some of my best friends are there. They hold down the fort from October to March. Just a bit cold during winter for me to move there full time but its one of the nicest places on earth even with the cold...

There's something about a state with people there who tell the DOT to go screw themselves and then stand behind the decision. Happened when the federal DOT tried to force the speed limits on Montana. The legislators said that we will make the limit, I believe, "safe and prudent" thus meaning unlimited top speed but one must drive safely while doing so. DOT told them they would pull the federal funding if they did this.

Montana essentially told them to go and bugger themselves and for many years there was no federal funding on its highways and also no speed limit in the interstate highways! Its nice to see a state tell the Feds to shove it and we know whats best for the people in our state!

Joe

Thanks for all the great progress pictures. Especially the ones with the mountains in the background. Hope you can get the top on before you are covered in the white stuff! Good luck and keep the updates coming.

Carey,

Very nice. I do have one one suggestion. I have a very similar set up - although mine is not heated - and I put dormers in the front. It really makes the garage look nice and the natural light sure makes a difference in the attic. I do not know if it is too late to modify the trusses, but I would think about it.

Jeb, thats a thought. That has been one of my concerns. It's just a big ugly box.
What we've planned so far is little shed roofs over the doors and windows that match the roof. Roof will be Rural Red. The building will be an Off White to match the machine shed.

I am adding another window up on the left wall in the attic. Just for color.

With the 32 foot open span. It probably too late. But I'll ask my coach.

I've lived in SoCal my whole life, and you know what? IM TIRED OF THE HEAT! I hate it. You guys can have it. There is nothing more horrible than a 100 degree + summer day in Los Angeles, stuck in traffic on the 405 with that feces brown smog giving you headaches. Give me Montana, with fresh air and snow. I've only seen snow a couple of times in my life.

I should have shot a picture of the alpenglow this AM. Around 7:30 it was stunning. Not a cloud in the sky. The peaks that you've seen a bright pink. Maybe in the AM.

Having lived in Scotland for a while, I know the pink of which you speak. You should see it over the Scottish Highlands, truly amazing.

Cary,

Adding dormers at this point in your construction is not difficult at all. Check with the guy who wields the framing hammer.

Jared,

Visit Montana in the spring or summer and you will never be happy again in much of the world. Winters are harsh but its worth it if you can take the cold. I just happen to love the desert but second on the list is in the Big Sky country...

Course the South island of New Zealand is the same along with much of Scotland, Ireland and Greece but I could go on and on.

Joe
