When they ask "how much" just throw a big number. If they try to come back tell them "I don't want or need to sell the car. Put up the cash or move along"

Every now and then, I've been asked, followed. I always tell them that I've got too much $, blood, sweat & tears into it. That usually ends the discussion. Hopefully, I won't need to sell my car, I love it. A blast to drive, look at, polish or just sit next to.
Recently, let my new Son-in-law & Daughter take it out......my wife couldn't believe I let them drive it. ![]() 1973 911 T MFI Coupe, Aubergine Steve |

I had to look up DROP CAM. You had me on that. I would put in a good security system......better quality than those things.

Besides all the usual comments and questions I've seen more than few times people taking pictures with their phone, both while moving or while stopped at a light. Kinda freaky.

About a month ago, I got two in one week:
First time, I'm in the garage under the car and a truck whips in my drive fast and the guy hops out and says his wife wants it. Scared the *&*p out of me. The number I gave him scared him, too. Second, I'm driving with the roof off and I notice a rough looking guy in a rough looking car weaving in out of traffic like he's trying to catch up with me-I'm thinking possible car-jack. I stop at a light being careful not to leave a lane open either side of me. He pulls out into oncoming traffic and whups around into the intersection blocking me like a "T", rolls down the window and wants to know if I'll sell it. "F*&* no" gets him to leave. Scared the *&*p out of me. Had to put the glock in the glove box for a while.

Anyone ever consider a LoJack or similar system in their Porsche? ~$700 for the system but heard good things of it working, especially on motorcycles. Thoughts?

Happened to me last night. I didn't see this thread until I was directed to it after I started a separate thread about it.
My story: I purchased an '87 3.2 Carrera back in October from the widow of the prior owner, who had the car for all but its first 5 years of life. It's a solid high mileage driver, but I knew it was going to need some TLC and was looking forward to trying to do some of the wrenching myself. With that said, it's visible flaws are obvious - paint, carpets, leather, vinyl, rubber all need some form of attention. Mechanically solid, but definitely needs a suspension refresh, and eventually a full engine rebuild (220K on the clock, burns a quart every 600 miles, no top-end rebuild in its history). I love the hell out of this car, but it's no concours queen. In any event, I get home yesterday and somebody has left a note on my car expressing their interest in buying the car. They left their phone numbers and indicated they'd pay cash. It was a little weird, to be honest.

Maybe DC is worse than other areas...
I have this happen all the time in the DC area. I bought my car in January and have had at least 6 people offer to buy it. But it is also my daily driver so it gets seen quite a bit.
I even had a guy offer me 30k for my Targa after I told him no the first time. Unfortunately he had already pissed me off by repeatedly interrupting the phone call I had pulled over to take, so I blew him off on principle. Most likely he would have back-pedaled on the price anyway if he saw I was willing to sell.

3x in last 3 months - two of those times, the "buyer" rang my doorbell while I was inside.
$40k price usually shuts them up.

Living in the Midwest, I usually just get the bird from disaffected Baby Boomers whose lives didn't turn out the way they expected. My Mustang Cobra, on the other hand...
![]() When I briefly worked at a parts store between gigs, I began driving said Mustang while my daily was on the mend for brake work. My boss advised that I park it up front so it didn't get stolen from the back lot (the same fate befell his worked-over Civic Si a few years prior). I had a guy come in claiming to know one of my friends, and kept pushing me for a price, so I finally quoted him something like 150% of market value. He scoffed at me and said "But worth it's nowhere near that much!" I replied 'I never said I wanted to sell, ***wipe." He stomped out and laid rubber in his clapped-out pickup. ![]() About a month after I bought my 911, I was at the Hershey swap meet and came back to a business card laid gently under the windshield wiper. I saved it, and took it as a compliment. A "nice" car in my neck of the woods is a Hummer H2 or a C5 Corvette, typically purchased with proceeds from a winning scratch-off ticket. Someone once asked me if my 911 was new. I kind of love living in the Bizarro Midwest sometimes...

I call it Wayne Carini Syndrome..
But its really a culmination of a number of things. Every yo-yo that thinks he knows something about cars all of a sudden wants to be a flipper. They've seen chasing the classics and other such shows, including many of the stupid auctions The Wall street Journal, NY Times, Wash Post and most major newspapers have done articles on collector car values rising. And the talk in the office always seems to turn to collector cars and whatta think this is worth? I saw the change coming, I even saw it here on Pelican as more and more parts flippers showed up.. they weren't really interested in helping the community or in many cases build or restoring these cars.. they had figured out that "hey, I can make a few bucks parting out these old Porsches" So yea, I think we're all experiencing this as I've had a couple of folks knock on my door, leave cards etc.. caught one a couple of weeks ago peeking under the covered 911 in my drive. I popped out onto the deck to let him know that he was on his way to loosing an arm! He said; oh I just wondered if it was for sale?

I've had a few, although sadly I haven't been on the road much this year. My favorite was a guy asking me as I pulled out of the lot at work.
He asked me what I would sell it for, and I replied nicely that I put a lot of work into it and it was worth a lot to me. He replied "A brother has money, if you ever want to sell it let me know." I'm just terrified it would end up jacked up with spinners like 1/2 the clean cars around here.

Our SC is very much a daily driver. Get notes on the windscreen quite often.
Yesterdays example. Hello! If you would ever sell your car my wife would look fantastic behind the wheel of this vehicle. Don't know what to think about that one.

I have noticed this...
I too am in the DC area. My 997 always garnered attention in its macadamia metallic paint, and my 2012 991 gets stares, but my 1978 911sc targa in road rashed petrol blue gets the offers at gas station fill ups, parked on the street in bethesda and out in St. Michaels. the secret is out, the general car loving public knows what we have for along time. These are special cars and for better or worse are becoming sought after. See you on the road...

Ask him how much he wants for his wife.
