That Darn Alternator Wire Shroud
I am reassembling after fixing up my alternator. I have the wires all back on, but I can't get the stupid wire shroud (which is inside the outer air shroud) back on the alternator's bolts. The issue stems from the open channel that is part of the wire shroud. Presumably, this guides air to the heater duct. However the ends of the channel's sides stick out and are causing problems.
There are three points of contact I can't seem to line up properly. 1) The rear (of car) top edge of the channel on the air shroud contacts the fan housing right where one of the braces of the housing itself lies. Should this end of the channel go on top of the housing's brace, or underneath it? 2) The front (of the car) top edge of the channel ends right near where the bundle of alternator wires go through the air shroud's back end. It can be hooked over the bundle, or tucked underneath. Which side does it go on? 3) The front (of the car) bottom edge of the channel ends right where the ground wire from the alternator is bolted to the engine. It seems it could go above or below the bottom edge of the wire shroud. Which side should it go on? I've had my hands stuck in that crazy tight place for an hour and no combination seems to allow the bolts to line up. Any ideas? Blue is the fan housing. Green is the live wires. Red is the ground wire. The wire shroud is black and the wire shroud's air channel is grey. ![]()

Here's a link. I have done this twice, and I can't say that it is easy. Do you have a Bentley manual? good luck, Gerry

There should be a notch in the extension for the onboard voltage regulator. The finning is to direct cooling air to cyl 1 and 2. If you're hitting the outer shroud, you need to rotate counter clock wise.
I the ground wire to center case is too close move it forward on the center line nut You want the VR either up at 12 o'clock or down at 6, no in between. Bruce |

Flatpac6 put me on the right track. I didn't have the hole in the air shroud lined up with my voltage regulator side. I had the VR at 6 o'clock, and was trying to put the shroud on 30 degrees off. Once I lined it up with the gap at the VR, it slid on pretty easily.
Now it is all back together, and I'm just waiting on my new CDI. The lesson is that if it won't fit, you have it oriented wrong. Reminds of putting my engine back in...

Glad you got that sorted out.
Which CDI are you replacing with?

Ingo is doing a swap with mine. He's a guy on this forum who does rebuilds/swaps.

CDI is slated to be delivered today. Hoping to go used-car shopping tonight with my brother-in-law whilst driving the Porsche.
Do you think that will hurt his bargaining chances?
