Engine Identification

OK so I bought a stripped down tub for next to nothing, my first PORSCHE! never thought I would be able to own my dream car! I was lucky to get a great deal on an engine/tranny combo complete! so now I am in need of identifying the engine to start the rebuild. engine # is 6290933, I think it is a 1979 3.0L any help confirming it, or correcting my mistake would be greatly appreciated!

Jim

Could be, BUT that serial could be 1969 as well. So, you also need to provide the engine type # which is located on the horizontal surface just behind the serial #; should be 901/xx or 911/xx.
Also useful are the transmission type & serial #'s form the bottom of the case.

ok so I looked on the enging case for any other identifying numbers. here is what I found

so in addition to the 6290933 there is 930/04

does that help narrow it down?

The tranny has 915 301 101 7R, not sure that is a part number or tranny number.

any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the flock!

Yes, you have a 1979 3.0L engine type 930/04 USA.

Cool. This means big port heads should be installed on this engine.
Does it have the air pump installed?

Good for you, and good luck!

Thanks Ed and DJ for the verification!

No air pump. Will I need to replace it, or can I run it without it?

I have it torn down a bit, and all looks good! I am debating about leaving the bottom end in tact to save some time and money. or going all the way and doing some mods for added hp. any suggestions?

I'm running an '81SC 3.0 with no air pump. Other more knowledgable peeps will be able to give you a definitive answer, but no problems when it was running.
I was in the same boat about owning my dream car.
Have fun! I know I have. Pics are required.
