this thread is QUITE comprehensive and explains how to remove, service and if necessary replace the oil level sensor http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/594192-oil-level-sending-unit-how-service-repair-maintain.html

I echo what darrin posted. I just went through this myself and it's a fairly easy thing to do. I'd say the biggest complication was cleaning all the crud off of the oil tank prior to removing the sensor so as not to contaminate things.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

It's not bad - just be careful you don't drop bits of the old brittle cork gasket from the top of the opening into the tank when you remove the outside cover. I seem to remember I had to rotate the sensor counter clockwise and lift it up and out towards me at the same time. Adding it back into the tank was the reverse action of removing it.

The bolts need very little torque too - you just want to snug them not squish the gasket or it will leak.

Replacing the unit after cleaning/changing can be challenging. Cut a hole in a piece of cardboard to practice your technique.

I second Sicklyscott's observation that the crud cleaning is no great treat, but the R&R is super easy to do with the car up and the wheel off. One nice thing is that the studs are set so that there is only one way the sensor can mount. 8mm socket, I think--watch that the washers don't try to run away from you.
