...or a Democrat's "want some fish?"

vs

Republicans "I got mine!"

'course I voted for Nader...

But (I think) we are all in favor of free discourse!

I gotta type faster. 'mmmmm..........fish' is classic!

"having been in academia most of my life"

Perhaps that's why my opinions are so highly valued and I'm so much in request; I'm not from the academic side of the fence, but rather the real-life side. I don't just know the book, but put it to practice every day.

We've suffered through and been amused by many trolls here before. Guys, call 'em when you spot 'em.

Nobody would embarass themselves publicly like this with sincerity.

Yes he would Chuck. Check NYC's prior posts- I doubt he'd back down on any of this in real life. He's not trolling us.

And NYC- I think your asking price for your 993 was out to lunch, but I've been in agreement with your assertions in this thread.

Wow.

Come on now...fess up. You're not in NYC at all. You're right here in Hollyweird. I'd recognize that studio exec attitude anywhere. At any rate, tish tosh and all that. Have your executive administrative assistant call my service and we'll do a few chukkas out at the club, then chat about what a prick Barry is before lunch (Vivendi is so yesterday). Then, it's off to Trader Vics for martinis and scotch (a man's lunch). Tally ho!

I've been in "school" off and on for the past 25 years. I've met many professors, one of which I was actually impressed with. The rest .... well, let's just say I wish I could buy them for what they are worth ... you know the rest.

Most were so caught up in "academia" that they actually believed their own drivel. very little of what they spouted out as truth had any relevance in reality.

BTW I think much less of the CEO's I've met than the professors.

I had typed out my opinion of the difference in types of college degrees, but deleted it. I really don't want to offend anyone who doesn't deserve it.
Except for evangelists, I don't mind offending them

Now what's all this about fish?

Apparently, they would. Economic theory aside, this is what I was talking about. I must admit it's hard to believe it's sincere...it must be a joke.

I disagree with NYC on the topic of quality of life.
However, I do agree with the somewhat morbid truth to the fact that we, as a society as a whole, put more "value" on pro- athletes, movie stars, and even race car drivers than we do with teachers.

Sad, isn't it.

I'm no academic. In fact, I am simply a high shcool graduate.
So, I am not afraid to admit that I cannot enter a debate such as this fully armed. (even if you don't want to admit that it has turned into a debate)

Rather, I enjoy reading through the posts. People have such incredible differences of opinion. It's interesting. And on may things I can honestly see both sides.

Again, I'm no academic, but it seems that thoughout human history there have always been rich, there have always been poor... there have always been oppressed, there have always been oppressors.
Is this likely to change? Probably not. Human nature. Period.
Is it a reasonable thought that everybody on this planet should be born with the same oppertunities as everybody else?
I don't think so. It just isn't so.

Ok, I'm rambling... keep it up guys, i'm enjoying this and I'm not going to call any names!

Indeed, check some other threads. He's been trolling us for a long time.

His post's drip with flame bait. Both the politics and the attitude are formulated to inflame.

I do admire his speed. He's ascended from doctoral program acceptance letter to CEO and Professor in just over 1 year. Hats off.

I feel compelled to respond to this. I don't want to, but like like watching a train wreck I feel I have to...

I was most taken by two statements in this whole shebang. The first is NYCs "You are paid what you're worth". I work for an investment bank (a big, proper global one, not boutique, not local) and I can let you all in on a little secret:

We get paid too much. We aren't THAT smart. We just charge a lot because we can (1% of $500m seems like a reasonable fee, right?). We get paid a lot because the firms earn a lot and it is a crappy lifestyle unless you are the sort of individual who gets off on working ridiculous hours, excessive travel, and being a bastard to your competitors and juniors.

Fortunately, for me, I'm finishing up tomorrow!!! Over summer (southern hemisphere) I'm gonna think about what I want to do. I suspect I'll end up back in a similar job because I like the money and, more importantly, the security it offers.

NYC - what is quality of life to you? It may surprise you to learn that other people define it differently. It may further suprise you to learn that other people can be happy without excessive amounts of money.

They are not inferior or less developed because of this. Arguably, they are in fact smarter than you if they are happy. Can you look at your life and assess yourself as happy? If so - how much of your income could drop away and you remain happy? What are the ramifications of this assessment - ie there are 250m+ people in the US and they can't all be New York living, CEO-Professors.

Which brings me to Jim's "I'm not impressed with our get-what-you-can-and-keep-it mentality". Dude - couldn't agree more right now. I've read that book.

Maximising ones own happiness is a lofty and understandable goal for life. But my own happiness is a function of those around me and the two are inseparable.

Lastly, I love Chuck's statement:

Nobody would embarass themselves publicly like this with sincerity.

I have to remember that...

No, no, you've got it all wrong:

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day;
Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit in your boat and drink all your beer.

Ah, a tech question I can contribute too!!!!
I use a UK product that used to be available mailorder called Stuttgart Clean. I also use it for removing stains from white carpets and brakedust from Fuchs! I think it was supposed to be a wheel cleaner originally.
