John really is a charitable guy. I had a broken throttle rod on my MFI linkage. Try and find a replacement for those! John dug around and found one and shipped it to me free!

I also value John's wealth of knowledge, experience, and kindness. As an avid music collector and trader (mostly live bootlegs), I choose to 'pay back' John by sending him a few shows. I have on good authority that some of the Grateful Dead that plays in his shop originated from my CD burner - sorry Super.

I am going to burn John a few more shows this weekend and send them up to Seattle with a note saying thanks from everyone at Pelican.

If anyone else is into recorded Live music, send me an email.
I have thousands of shows from many, many artists.

Just want you to know that those of us in Seattle feel the same way--lucky to have you here!

!!!!

Might as well chime in as a reply or post by John certainly catches my attention.

John, you are the Tiger Woods of the air cooled flat six" techs " !!!

You da Man !!!

Now all we need to do is convince Porsche to give John a GT3 for keeping so many of their products on the road.

John--I'm also a great admirer of your service knowledge, your service advice and especially of your service philosophy and willingness to share! I consider your phone # in my cell phone as that extra bit of insurance for this old-timer's(78) long distance travel! Thanks for being there! Now, a question. What IS/ARE "split" bus parts? Ihave a son who drives and loves an early 70's VW bus and
would like to put him to work on your request. Let us know what you're looking for. Is that similar to the reference to early beetles split rear window?
Thanks again for sharing.

a split bus is a bus thru 1967, with the 2 piece windshield. i have a 1964 21 window bus that i may restore, but i would rather restore a 23 window, which is thru 1963. the difference is in the rear corner windows. most need quite a bit of rust repair in the frame, lower body sections and floor. rust is a given, but hopefully i can find one that's not too bad.

Just got to the keyboard and found this thread, so I must comment......

I consider myself *very* lucky to live within 150 miles of John's friendly shop. I've driven that distance several times just to hear his generously-given advice. Also, he never refuses an e-mailed or phoned question when you're stumped, or in an emergency situation.

A great mechanic as well as a good friend. Thanks for being there for us, John.

Edit: John doesn't realize it, but he is actually writing a book. Everytime he posts here, I print it out and put it in a special binder. Already building "Volume 2".

John's da man.

When rebuilding my 915 tranny, he posted how to remove the dogteeth from the gears without the fancy porsche tools. I also learned the 'inertia' technique for removing bearings from the shafts from him.

Cheers for John!

They are very few professionals who donate their time like JW. If you are ever in So Cal, let me know and the beers, whiskey, whatever are on me!

How could I not agree with the sentiments here. John has without fail been open and courteous every time I have called or stopped by his shop. I cannot figure out how I got lucky enough to have him and his shop just a couple of miles from my house.

I think there a lot of us who read John's responses and appreciate them. My parking brake light came on unexpectedly and stayed on while at a light. When I got home, I read one of his post, "usually, it's the brake light switches bleeding info to the printed circuitry in the dash unit. try the battery disconnect with the key on, then when it's reconnected, turn off the key, and then start the car."

I tried it and it worked - I had to laugh because it was too easy and I haven't had a problem since then. I am certain he saved me quite a few of hours of troubleshooting.

I too must add my tribute to John Walker. About 6 months ago I purchased a prestine 1982 Black coupe and have made numereous modifications and fixed several little things. John has been kind enough to respond to even my small posts on the BB. The last post was to fix the servo arm for my automatic heat regulator. Even the guys at PelicanParts couldn't come up with the part...but John came through with the right part number and the Pelican Parts people got it for me.

Thanks for all your help John. The world needs more people like you.

John Walker's real world experience is worth a million books. His attitude about sharing his knowledge is one to be admired and copied. Think about it in the areas where you are an expert. Do you share information or do you hide it? I share, and it has made me a better person both personally and professionally.

I respect JW's opinion because he seems to blend commen sense with experience and seems to have plenty of experience. He's got the Dean Witter touch where people get quite when he talks. It's guys like JW that make this BBS so valuable.

Thanks.
