Costs to back date a car

I have an 89 coupe that was mostly a track car. Its been sitting in my garage with the suspension off for 2 years as I just have had too many other pressing issues to put it back together. I have also spent my track time and dollars with the bike the last couple years.

My question is this... I'd like to go this direction with the car:

Thats a car listed in the "Cars for Sale" section at $85k. I am thinking I can reproduce that for a lot less. Paint and all.

I already have a set of Lindsey's. The rest looks like bolt on fiberglass fenders, bumpers, rear deck lid. Then just the back dated marker and signal lamps. I dont see it costing another $45K assuming I valued my 89 at around $40k.

Thoughts?

It all depends on how much work you can do yourself and what you want to upgrade. It's definitely possible to get it done for less than 45k, but anytime you start building one of these cars you should expect to go over budget! Good luck and take lots of pics!

I am backdating my 84 currently. This is how it stacked up for me$$

FG Bumpers ~$800 for the pair
Steel TS extensions from TRE ~$700
Steel Bonnet extension from FennLane UK ~$300 shipped
Horn Grills repro ~$100
Repro signal housings ~$300
used Lenses ~$100

~$2K total after selling some stuff to offset ( I also had a few of the pieces).

Paint for me will be ~$600 only doing part of the car.

I am going to outsource the welding to a buddy ~$500after I do most of the fitting and some paint prep.

That white blue car is awesome and has many nice performance upgrades to the suspension and interior. Kind of surprised it has taken so long to sell. Its over priced in my opinion but I dont play in that league.

also The mirrors and trim will add some headache/complexity and some cost or a lot of cost if you outsource.

I know you are very familiar with the early 911 game but thought I would give you some details.

Just my opinion but being an 89 I'd leave it stock. These cars are getting rare!

As a suggestion you could go in this direction instead. Super clean and mostly OEM with some tasteful additions. (note the "perfect" wheels)

I don't see the 1989 being any rarer than any other standard run 911.

I just backdated my 83 SC this past winter. It was done as a "bolt-on" backdate just in case I ever want to go back to original (which I doubt).

I used Porsche steel RS rear bumper corners, center panel, a 71 steel long hood, Dansk steel front bumper, and EB Motorsport light boxes. Did all my own work except the paint. With the cost of all the parts, including seals, lenses, etc.., and the cost to paint the new parts, it was about $7,000. Could be done for less with fiberglass parts. Note, I did not change my mirrors or anything in the interior.

If it were me, I would go with an IROC look. They look great, and everything would be bolt-on. That is unless you want to go wide body....

The car is far from stock already so I am not worried about that.

Thanks to all for all the input.

Lou the car looks great. I like the idea its all bolt on and not fiberglass.

The white cars is nice. IMO its grossly over priced, but thats just an opinion. I still come back to it a lot because it looks well executed. The carfax is all over the map miles wise and I assume the motor has double the miles the odometer has on it with no reported rebuild.

I'm nearing the end of a backdate. You can read about it here: VWVortex.com - Buh buh buh Benny and the jets (911 content)

I'm probably around $4-5k in by now

Flyn-Hawn...

Didn't this car just take an award at it's first public showing in Monterey?

Just gorgeous.

So, how did you deal with the hood latch and keep things "bolt-on"?

No hood latch, just hood straps.

Ahhh, makes sense!

In case anyone is interested, I convert steel short hoods into long hoods -- as another way to back date and keep things "bolt-on". This uses the stock latch and latch panel, just bolt-on the new hood and return your original short hood to me for core to make the next guy's hood. I think it looks pretty factory!

I'd go the Carrera Club Sport route myself. Lose some weight, minor engine tweeks...
