Sienna Metallic 436
Hello Everyone:
This is my first post here. I have not been part of an automotive forum in 16 years, so please, bear with me. I restore my own cars, and can never seem to resist giving them personalities through modifications. Those I do myself too, sometimes with off-the-shelf stuff, sometimes custom fabrications. I just recently became a Porsche owner, having purchased a 1980 911 SC with my best friend last spring, and a second one, all mine, a 1977 911s in october last year. The 1977 is quite the basket case, having been converted into a slant nose and of course, painted guards red. I got it after being left in a garage for 14 years and had an advanced rodent civilization living in it, so it will take a while before it sees the street in anger again. It will be turned into a turbo look car, since taking the flares off "forces" me to take the easy way out. When I bought it, I ordered the COA, and to my surprise, its original color is Sienna Metallic, Porsche 436 (also known as Sarah Diamant). It will be returned to that color. I have downloaded about 110 pictures from the internet, (yes, OCD ravages me), and the variations in tone are, to say the least, dramatic. The paint code and formula for PPG and Dupont are different, and I will ask my friendly paint supplier for a sample, but I would like to request members of this forum to show me their cars in the color, and specify which brand of paint they used, and how the brown, pink, copper, orange and red all come out in different lighting. I like to zero in on my concepts before I start a car, and that takes TIME. I have one car ahead in line before getting to this one, but I'm already loosing sleep over it. I would like to get to know most or, if possible, all of the sienna metallic owners out there. Most of all, as I'm sure some others do, would like to get to establish friendships with people who can make this experience more enjoyable. Thank you for reading my loooong post. R. Morales

I have a 436 painted '83 SC and have ordered touch up paint and the Dupont mix is correct and is a good match for my original paint....the PPG was way to reddish and almost a maroon.

intresting i had a 77 painted in 436. I ordered a touch up aerosol, and it was quite maroon. The car had been repainted, looked more like the picture above. My touch up kinda matched it in the boot/inside areas, but was not a match for the outside.
Anway i decided i didn't like the maroon colour, but did like the more orange colour, which looked like the picture above. So go with that! |

Has any of you guys seen the 930 on petrolicious? Look for more pictures of that car (it has a plate that says autobahn). There is a particular one where it is next to a guards red 930 and a metallic dark blue 996. It looks VERY burgundy. I'm confused in terms of the BEHAVIOR of the paint, especially the different formulas. I'm going to blatantly plagarize here, and I can't really quote where I got these pictures from, since I don't remember! Ok, so here are the formulas:
![]() One has maroon and transparent red, the other has red shade yellow, orange, maroon, magenta and black. The other stuff you see there are the metallic grain you see, plus the other enhancers, or "stabilizers" which have an effect over how it will reflect light by the different colors on the mix. |

scarydriver....that is the same color as mine pictured above....as the Siena/sahara Brown is a metallic it looks dif depending upon the sunlight.....Burgundy Metallic is a dif color. The pic I posted is in the shade...in the sunlight it looks like the turbo.
Not the color just below the turbo....mine may be slightly faded after 33 years but I had the duck painted to match..... 436-9-3 436 Sahara Diamond Metallic ...9....factory paint....3 Herbert paint (factory supplier) Good luck with your choice....either is nice.

Reiver, your car has the original paint on it? That's cool. The part I found scary was that different suppliers might have paints that behave differently under different circumstances. I have pictures of cars that look like the picture you posted, and the other complete extreme, which is this:
![]() This is the SAME car in the past picture. My car is also 436-9-3, and the only part of the car where I can see the original color is on the insideof the door, which looks like your car. I wanted a Porsche with a COLOR color, and after looking at pictures of this car, I completely fell for it. I just want to make sure it IS that dynamic as to go through that wide of a range. I love it. When my friend and I bought the SC, we were bummed out about finding out it originally was an oak green metallic painted, of all colors, guards red. Had it not been freshly painted before it was sold to us, we would have returned it to stock, but THAT car, might not be permanent. The s on the other hand, being a more radical approach and not "time shared", is going to look like the one in the picture, except with a whale tail instead of the teatray. I'm also considering going rally style on the fuchs and paint the centers gold. We'll see. I started seriously considering the color when I saw a targa close to the chinese theater while in L.A. I tried to catch up to the car, but took too long for the light to change. |

Mine has been repainted and has rust but is very photogenic. The color and hues look very different in all kinds of light. Sorry I am not sure on the paint that was used.

The best color. You will love the way it looks, depending on the light.

Cheekybird; that is a great variation there! It goes from burgundy to brownish. Does it ever look salmon or copper, or even burnt orange?

Yes, It is mostly original (and the stone chips attest to that lol)...I don't think it has faded either as the paint in the frunk and engine compartment etc. match the exterior.
It does 'change color' depending upon the light.

I would say you get more burgundy/brownish/copper then Salmon color. To me it is such a classic color especially with a cork interior, just wow.

More red in what was the respray. The true salmon metallic has more brown/orange.

Tito911s, what I meant by the brown or salmon was if it looks like Reiver's car at any point or circumstances, such as when it's clowdy. Does it ever look like that, and has it ever looked like the one I posted between the red and blue cars?

I imagine it would. But less so with mine. Getting a respray to match is no easy task. Probably to much red which clouds out the browns and oranges that you'd see in a purely original paint job.

Cheekybird, has your car ever displayed the tone that Reiver's car has?

code 436
My 77 Targa had same code, 436. As I understand, it was a two year color only for Porsche, 1976 and 77. My car had a lousy repaint so I stripped it and repainted it with PPG base/clear. Looks reddish brown in daylight, but at night under fluorescent lighting or street lights, looks metallic red.

Bob, good looking Targa.
The PPG mix for 436 is much redder than the stock Porsche color (if my factory paint is a good example)...the Dupont 436 mix is a good match if a tad darker but mine may have faded that amount in 33 years. PPG is redder...Dupont mix bronze as per stock.
