g50 oil change found something strange on magnet

like the title says,
while doing a tranny oil change there was a small cylindrical pc of metal on the drain plug magnet.
anybody know what this is?

the transmission seems to shift fine. notchy when cold but smooth once warm.
was rebuilt about 5 yrs ago.
it is my brother in law's car so i dont know the extent of the tranny rebuild, nor do i know who did it.

i did try the search function but i couldn't find any info.

thanks,
lorenzo

That looks like a shift rod detent. Never taken apart a g50 so don't even know if they have them.

Ohhh that's an awkward problem. Judging from the size that should be in a shift rod.
It's very easy to misplace during a teardown of the tension plate. Your trans has the potential to get into two gears at once-sorry. If you have access to PET you can look up the drawing. I can't recall
offhand which rod it goes into-maybe the 3/4? but it has to be installed during assembly and
there is no way to fix it without tearing the trans down. Or put it under your pillow or somewhere
and hope you don't find yourself stuck somewhere with corvette people around snickering!

Wow. OK, thanks for the info. I don't know what PET is but I assume some sort of exploded parts diagram. Is it a possibility that the rebuilder left it in there by accident and my bro in-law is lucky?? I doubt it. I need to know how serious this can potentially be. He is unfortunately not on good terms with the company that rebuilt his trans.

Thanks ,
Lorenzo

It's very easy to misplace that during assembly. I put some grease in the hole on the shift rod
to hold it until the rods into position. Assuming the detents are all working which they probably are
considering he's been using it without issues the odds of having it engage two gears at once are
fairly slim.

Agree with Mark. Probably an old assembly error and not an about to self destruct new problem.

Yup. Certainly what I saw in my 915. Look at picture number 2. Transmission reassembling 915 transmission Is the G50 the same?

One positive aspect, it doesn't look damaged and it won't cause damage now.

Lorenzo:

The PET is the Porsche Factory parts catalog. You can find your car here:

Porsche Classic Genuine Parts Catalog - Porsche Cars North America

It is a .pdf and you can save it to your computer.
