Shredded Belt!?

I took the '76 out and after about 30 minutes I heard a strange noise that sounded like a sputtering sound so I decided to turn back.

When I got home I popped the trunk and noticed this shredded belt you see here. There was no noticeable performance change. I've had the car for about 3 weeks so I'm still learning about all the different parts of the engine.

Yep...luckily it didn't take out your fan belt when it broke! Easy replacement...check the tension when done.

How is the fan belt?
This is an oppty to learn how to change that, as well.
I think you need to remove it anyway to get the A/C belt off.
For fitment, I think a belt from the dealer is the way to go.
And order a few washer spacers, in case you're missing any.

That means an oppty to learn how to use the parts catalog for your year.

old or loose belts can come off and wrap around the crank pulley with the heat created it will foul the front main seal causing an oil leak or complete loss of oil. you got lucky, when they get knotted up in the pulley shroud there's not a ton of room so the belt is constantly reintroduced to wrapping around important things. if the AC is defunked, loose the belt and remove that boat anchor...

BTW, Sugarwood is correct check your alternator fan belt to see if it needs replacement too.. when changing out the AC belt do them both at the same time and it is a good idea to pick up a couple of extra shims. For the alternator belt I recommend using original Porsche brand. If you're lucky your car still has the tool kit that includes the tool that holds the alternator fan pulley while you remove the bolt.

And don't ever ever ever continue to drive the car if you hear something like that again or if the alternator light goes on. Being air cooled, the engine may get ruined the next time if you continue to drive it. Be very aware of weird engine noises. Stop the engine and check it out immediately. You don't need to remove the alternator belt to replace the AC belt and can run the car just fine until you get a replacement belt, but unless I knew the history of that alternator belt, I'd replace it at the same time just for the peace of mind.
Think about getting a Bentley repair manual. That and this forum will help you keep the car on the road.

I can't seem to find where to buy the replacement shims, does anyone know where to get those?

Also, how do you normally go about ordering from Porsche directly in regards to the fan belt?

Make sure the compressor is not frozen either.

To install that new belt - there are several bolts you need to loosen on compressor bracket. Then rotate the tensioning bolt to slide the assembly closer to the fan pulley. Install belt, then tighten the tensioning bolt and remaining bolts when correct tension is established.

That belt shredded for a reason. As post #14 says, check the compressor for free movement. AC compressor bearing may be seized.
