CDR-220 Bluetooth install

My Sony bling stereo finally gave up and it was time to replace it with something proper. I did look at some of the current Sony head units but everything looked like it was ripped out of starship enterprise. No go

I ended up buying a used CDR-220. It looks somewhat period correct and goes well with the 993 gauges in my Targa. The knobs had the common "sticky decay" sickness. So I did the plastidip treatment and they look like new.

One thing with the CDR220 is that it's optimized for a viewing angle of about 30 degrees. In the older cars you're looking more straight at the display and there is almost no contrast. I had to modify the display unit to optimize the contrast for looking straight at it.

Then I wanted to be able to play stuff off my iPhone. I bought a Logitech Bluetooth adapter and installed it permanently into the head unit. I'm really pleased with the outcome. See here for some shots. As an added benefit the Bluetooth adapter's blue LED is visible through the volume knob. Kinda cool

Just for future reference... Porsche still sells the knobs. They aren't too expensive.

I know but a 6$ can of plastidip beats 40$ worth of replacement knobs from the dealer that will break down again.

Plasi Dip

Agree with Ingo,

I pulled mine off and sprayed with Plast-Dip, worked fine but needed to reapply, it gets hot in S Florida and they can get sticky again.

nice, I did the same thing a little while ago. (CDR220 install)

Did the same mod with the LCD too!

Good job!

When I installed my CDR220 a few years back, I used a wired connection for an iPhone. It's not as glitzy as a fancy schmany Bluetooth wireless interface - not universal like Bluetooth and it has a wire that I have to tuck under the carpet. However, it'll charge my phone or the iPod that I just leave hooked up in the car, and it's got better sound quality than Bluetooth that'll I'll likely never notice in an old 911 driving down the road. Plus, being wired, I won't lose the iPod in the car somewhere like I do everything else that's small, because it's got that leash attached.

I installed a Yatour digital music player plus optional bluetooth in my 993. They make a connector for becker / CDR-220. Whole setup was about $120 on fleabay though that was about 2012.

Takes the place of CD changer, up to 99 songs in each folder, folders correspond to CD’s, total 6 IIRC, head unit controls selection of “CDs” ie folders and songs.

Bluetooth option give you handsfree phone, which works great, can also play music on BT from my iPhone, though the head unit doesn’t control the music selection on the iphone.
