Cab back to Targa! Project "BugBug" goes back to where he once belonged

Last measurement is cross measurements from the front right outside corner of the rear seat to the centerline of the upper left latch-point on the Targa bar (cross measurements to the same points as 2 posts ago): 1275mm

Got my oil cooler hoses but am beat from riding bike park all day.. Ill slap up some pics tomorrow.

Oil cooler hoses installed, filled Bugbug back up with oil. No leaks! Not that Id thought there would be, but nice nonetheless.
So! Temps are wayyy down obviously. Mission accomplished. One more little thing done.
Other small stuff done not mentioned in the "build thread"
-All fuel hoses replaced
-New fuel accumulator
-Valve adjustment
-Turbo covers
-Plugs
-Replaced broken fuse block(Yay! Lights!!)
-New internal Tstat and oil pressure sender(Wrong sender was giving some nutty pressure readings, thanks pelican with the gauge part # the proper sender was provided)
-New temp sender too! Also the wrong sender for the gauge..( The motor is not the original, nor are the gauges. Some fun there, but sorted now.)
-Ripped out all the rear carpet and front mats/bottom carpet. Just old and crappy.
-Replaced a bunch of vacuum lines including brake booster stuff
-New H4 bulbs and a few tail light/marker bulbs
-Tore out cd player and speakers
-Removed the giant tits off the back bumper(Made of lead! haha!)
-Changed out the steering wheel for an older momo I had (The wheel I removed was ricediculous)
-Got the horn working(10 lbs of gravel in the existing horn,swapped out
-Track mats(love dem)
-Removed FG wing that was tired, ugly and probably never fit right

-A ton of cleaning! This car was grubby beyond grubby.. Still not done with cleaning..


But!!
The targa bar is getting welded back where it once belonged on Monday. Paint, Glass etc to follow.I received my trim / seals/ etc for the rear of the car yesterday so no excuses!

I'm lucky enough to have a friend who is a bodyman/metal fab guy. Adam at Metalcraft helped build my flared 914 years ago and has turned out a ton of awesome builds since we became neighbors 10 years ago..

We were going to do this at my house, but decided to just do it at my shop.(2 doors down from his shop), then (thankfully) we ended up doing this at his shop this holiday Monday. I was almost worthless, but did buy pizza and took some measurements.
This is how it went.




Yuck! The removal of the cab mounts was ugly. More like the fab was ugly. So it was decided to cut away the inner tub to reveal the bottom of the original Targa bar. Ever wonder how far that bar is welded into the tub? There you have it!
No rust! That's always good.


Boxing in the inner support. A ton of cleanup, and welding was done in the adjacent areas to fix up the cab conversion.



This is the "new" bar welded to the old mount. Using Tom's measurements and the top I borrowed, we located/positioned/mounted the bar. This picture the welds have been sanded a bit and primered.




Bad picture! This is the other side, sorry for the quality, but not that exciting anyways. Looks like it should before finishing.

What I still have to snap pics of are the window channel bits, and the final inner skinning of the tub. It looks good!




Is it a Targa yet?? Damn close.. But I don't think so.. The glass is next. Is it possible to install the glass and pull it right out without damaging the seal? I would like to do this if I can,just for fitment of the glass.


I'm going to tackle the glass seal next. I tried half assedly but need to give it a real go. Its gonna be a real pain if my preliminary attempts are any indication!Haha!

There is on this forum a very good post of targa window fitting by using ground anchors and a strap to put forward pressure on the glass, that makes pulling the seal in much easier (don't have to press on the glass at the same time).

Last Sunday I dropped the Bug off at Metalcraft.(Look at those hotrod oil lines :P) It was the nicest day in a couple weeks, so the cool temps coupled with no top or rear glass didn't matter. I was too busy having fun New oil cooler doing its job perfectly.



On the weekend my buddy Strudelwagen said he would send me a ducktail with some H4s. He obviously rules! The duck fits nice, and the headlights beat the crap out of the old sugar scoops. Thanks SF!!!!!



Disassembly, and some body work.



The bug bug was pretty smooth, just lots of clear and paint. Too much clear and paint! at least its not crusty underneath.




Some more sanding and some cookie cutters taking the stage! The speed metal Porsche paint/bodywork wheels in full effect :P





Also, glass out.(windshield! obviously the rear glas was out! haha!, window glass not out) Forgot to mention that. Also the antenna is history. Welded up and gone. New glass on the way and seals, trim from our host. Bug bug is coming along! Check out that hotrod oil cooler

This is way too much fun! Reassembly is going nicely. Glass on Tuesday. All the new trim and seals are going to make everything extra cool.
My beater hotrod almost looks good enough to go to the ball!



I have a cool old grill for the duck somewhere, looking forward to all the trim around the rear window to go on. Almost a Targa again

The Bugbug is coming along... That bumper is swiss cheese ! Glass was postponed until tomorrow. Looking forward to the final re Targafying of this car.
