I happened to be looking through my shop manual and I noticed that the mainshaft (input shaft) on a Sportmatic doesn't have 2nd gear permantantly attached.
Could that be used as an alternative to a "904" input shaft in a normal 901/911 box? Basically, could you swap it into a regular box? Could you use it in a 5-speed and still keep all 5 gears?

I don't like to disagree with Roland, but the mainshaft in the sporto is the same as a 4-speed 901, and won't work in a 5-speed. It is missing the splined portion for first gear - the shaft is shorter by that much.
If you look at the diagrams in the factory manual, you will see that the castle nut is right up against the bearing on the forward side of the intermediate plate in the sporto, whereas the five speed has 1st gear there. |
