First drive!!

Yes, really.......

Personally I was not prepared for how insanely fast this motor would be. I could write about it all day, but the video says it most of it.

It idles great, and runs greater than great at full throttle and is a mix of rich and lean, depending, at mid throttle/part load so I've got some work to do.

Oh, and the gear ratios are brilliant. Hope to find some open road today so I can hit 3rd and 4th.

More later!

So happy for you Jonny! Your build and attention to detail is both inspirational and aspirational. I’m glad to see you getting it running, but sad to know I won’t be able to watch this car evolve for much longer.

Congratulations Jonny. Just watch out for the OPP and other drivers, some who seem to have forgotten how to drive during the lock down.
Many Cheers,
Johan

Great news Jonny!

Most MFI cars with hot cams will respond favourably to a little more advance around the RPM that they come on cam. Then back off to standard levels at high RPM. Something you can’t do with a mechanical advance but can with a programmable unit like CDI+. Get the motor run in first though.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone! In particular Johan for a good reminder about the OPP (Ontario has a pretty draconian policy on speeding) and Jonny for some tech advice - for now the timing is set to 12 btdc at idle and slopes to 32 btdc at 3500 I think so there's lots to be done there and probably a bit of torque to be gained.

Even though it's far from running right, I'm over the moon about the way this thing is running and driving, and could write all day about it! So pleased that at this stage of the tuning all I've done is fiddle with the idle adjustment and main rack a few clicks, and was actually able to take a little drive in the country to do a bit of break-in:

The car is hilariously fast at full throttle, and the sound is something else - it's a lot less peaky than I thought it might be, nice fat midrange and will be really driveable once I get the tuning right. It feels like it has zero rotating mass and just gathers speed so easily and effortlessly.

The chassis needs work - the nose moves up and down a LOT in response to the brutal acceleration in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, and without any (MUCH NEEDED) bump steer correction (on the way!!!) it's a handful, especially when keeping an eye on the AFR gauge. The rear also squats a lot for the same reason. Nice problem to have. I'm going to have to go stiffer with the TB's, which I sorta planned - the Rot Rod was a test bed for the 21/28mm setup and should be perfect for this car, maybe 20/28. I've been thinking of going to 29 rear in the rot rod, anyway.....

The quaife diff is brilliant. The brakes, not so much, I think I am going to have to rethink my pad choice and move up to HP+ from HPS. I knew the brakes would require a good shove without a booster but I think I can get it to stop a bit easier, and am concerned there may not be enough braking power for a panic stop right now.

Anyway, it's far from done, but super happy so far - everything works as it should and it drives so nice and smooth and feels like a new car!

So great to see this update.
I was just redoing my 'to do list' for my car and yours is a constant motivator.
I can't wait to see some more video.

Still battling with the tuning - I was making adjustments to the part load screws and have run out of adjustment on those. I was making headway but now up against a roadblock.

Because I have the manual enrichment device between the seats I am able to give it a little shove and cheat the MFI into dunping enough fuel for full throttle acceleration and my god it goes like a scalded cat.

I'm going to start a seperate thread for the MFI tuning since I think it's most appropriate to do so. I'll continue to update this thread as I make changes to the supension, wheels, tires. Oh and hopefully can get some better pics and of course video.

Jon, do think you can play with space cams? I talked with Mark Jung and they can be custom designed, 3D printed, tested and then machined to the final profile.

Hi Shaun,

I think I am going to have to. The 2.7RS space cam was a good starting point but the part throttle lean condition is no surprise, given the increased size of the throttles. There's a non-linear relationship between throttle diameter and airflow and throttle opening angle. Basically the engine is getting way more air at a given throttle opening than the space cam is allowing for.

I have a few tricks up my sleeve still do plan to email Mark to see what he thinks. I also have a spare "T" cam that might be a good starting point, just have to whittle away at the lean spots. Sounds easy huh? LOL.

Oh yeah - through a comedy of my own errors I ended up losing a bunch of oil from the MFI pump on one of my test drives. It leaked onto the left side exhaust and started to smoke like crazy - simultaneously (but unrelated) the #5 plug wire fell off, so I was pretty sure something had gone horribly wrong. Thankfully just business as usual.

I cleaned up the mess as best I could and hosed down the engine compartment with a few full cans of brake cleaner. All good until I went out for another tuning run and got the exhaust hot again - I guess a bunch of oil found its way into the heat exchanger and blue smoke started to come out the defrost vents!!!

Pretty sure my tuning experience looks like a Cheech and Chong movie, so far.

Just curious, is this the same Mark Junge from Vesrah Suzuki racing? Not a super common name.
