You never know... but I anticipate selling it when it's done after I've had a chance to dial it in. We all know I'm not too quick with that process, so I'll have plenty of time to enjoy it.

Somehow [I fear] I've become a hopeless romantic about these mega-builds like PHM.
I (we?) grow to associate these works of art with their builders, and then when they're sold I feel a sense of loss. It's so weird, but I feel it in my bones.

I lived and breathed every single detail of that build for years and wouldn't change a single thing - including selling it.

I'm now free to move onward and upward, using the tools, skills, experience and knowledge I've gained - all that stays with me even though the car is gone.

I've learned a lot about drives me - I need a technical challenge, and a creative outlet. A project like that more than fulfills (for me) the need to calculate, design, build, and create something (hopefully) really cool, desirable, and, as it turns out, valuable.

With any luck the next one will be even better! For one thing I think I can make it a bit lighter. Do I dare shoot for 1999 pounds dry?

I say shoot for under 2000... gives a larger target

I understand what you're saying 100%.
As an onlooker from afar, my relationship with PHM is very different than yours. I can totally understand how you are ready to move onward and upward after 8 years. I was there with my last big VW project.

I think if you keep it narrow, 1999 will be an easy target for the likes of you.
Less body, narrow wheels, narrow tires, and small brakes really make it easy to keep the lbs/kilos off.

Now if you go ST and target 1999 dry, that's a totally different animal altogether.

Paint it purple, keep it at/under 1999 and call it Purple Rain or Prince.
Kinda cheesy, but people gobble that stuff up.

Project Light Metal; a Magnesium melody.

Very cool Jonny, I along with everyone else are eagerly awaiting this next saga.

Great score Jon! are there any parts that haven't seen sun but are base clear? i'll be tackling the IGM 76 this year and have 3 different colors of IGM from Spies, PPG and Glasurit. The PPG was the closest. Spies was very German and closer to pea green, Glasurit was Easter mint green and the metal flake was too large. PPG was in the middle.

So now we know where the 3.5MFI motor is going to end up.

I certainly have options available but I am slightly obsessed with the lightness of the mag block of the 2.7. This gives me that option to explore as well and we'll see how it looks once apart.

My intention was to build the 3.5L and sell it once complete to help offset the cost of all this nonsense, and the plan was to put it in the Rot Rod for break-in, datalogging/tuning, and dyno testing.

It's a sunroof car, but not for long! So there should be just enough original painted bits in there that will be surgically removed and I could easily send you some.

The possibilities are pretty exciting. ST widebody wouldn't be much heavier than a narrow body if the wheels were kept to 7's and 9's:

But given the fact that those will easily fit under a set of Carrera flares... and they are in my shop...

Awesome. Reminds me mightily of my 1980 SC Targa. I've always loved the Ice Blue/Green color palette on these cars

Carrera flares are so nice and the weight difference can't be that much.....certainly if magnesium is involved or a 3.5L gets your touch..... 9's in the back would be so right.
