I have owned a 1995 Range Rover LWB and currently a 1999 Disco Series II and here's my opinion boiled down quite simply.

If you want to own one of the most capable off road vehicles in the world, buy a Land Rover. This is of course assuming you want a car to go offroad, as I do frequently. Yes I agree there are alot of minor problems with these vehicles, but the engine and suspension are solid and time tested to the tune of almost 30 years (sound familiar). It's the small stuff that gets you.

If you don't intend on using the car off-road, look at the suburban SUV's like the Cherokee or Explorer. I myself prefer the sport wagons from Audi and BMW.

People are always bad mouthing Landrover's for reliability and depreciation, but I believe if you buy them for what they do best (go offroad) then you have to look past the minor maintenance problems. Us being Porsche people should understand this pretty well.

Is buying any Porsche not under warranty a sound financial decision when it comes to repairs and maintenance? I let others debate that. But I bought my 87 because Porsche makes some of the best sports car's in the world.

My .02 anyways!

My thoughts... unless you plan on doing some off-roading, I would steer far clear of a discovery.

For a functional, well-engineeered, utilitiarian vehicle, the Audi A4 Avant Quattro is difficult to match.

My wife uses this as her daily driver -- and we use it as our ski vehicle. It has plenty of space and is excellent in the snow. We share a Tahoe house with the owner of a Discovery and with the owner of a Chevy Tahoe. There have been three nights when I was the only one who could get up the (slick) driveway -- how embarassing for them. The only time they are better off is when we get > 12 inches of heavy Sierra cement... ...and then I have difficulty.

Thumbs up

Hey all,

Terrific Advice. At this point, I think an SUV is out of the question, and that an A4, A6 or a Q45 might be the frontrunners. I just need to try and see if I can get something late at my price goal. The Bimmers really seem to hold their value well, even when they are 5 years old or more. I'd rather spend the $$ and get more bang for my buck, such as all wheel drive with the audis or the extra perks of a Q.

Anyhow, any other input or suggestions will be appreciated. Maybe someone can sway me.......that's why I've started this thread.

THANKS AGAIN.

REGARDS,
JON
