I understand. I had concerns and that’s why I left some parts on the case. In the end care or carelessness makes or breaks a project.

Glass beads get into all the oil passages which are hard to clean without removing all the case plugs, the piston squirters, which would have to be removed to be sure there's nothing packed behind them, etc.

I hear you John. The utmost care will be taken before I assemble this.

I was going to buy one of these machines at the cost of $15k until I spoke with the vendors that make them.
They had stated that you need to cap off all the oil galleys. Being's that motorcycle engines are small and any oil passage can be easily blocked off, not a problem. Trying to block off all the passages in a 911 motor seemed to be too much IMO. Vapor honing does look like fresh aluminum when done (no contest) and does not harm delicate parts, but soda does pretty good too and absolutely 0 worries about harm from baking soda. Again though, MotoSook, those parts look gorgeous!!!!!

Those parts look beautiful, but the idea of microscopic glass particulate inside the case is more than I could bear. You're a brave soul. Hubs and brake drums are a whole different animal.

You just knocked all the patina off that case and devalued the marque. Haven't you remembered anything from gruppeb back in the day?

Believe me I had my reservations, but I'm not the first to do this to a case.
Kevin - I'll put the patina back, but i'm going to powder coat the inside of the engine! |

Dude, use an oil-shedding coating in there like is used on conrods??? 50 hp awaits you!
![]() BTW I consulted with Elbowmotions on this snake oil vapor blasting treatment and Professor SS Kleine, Phd-PE-CPA-Esq-DDH tells me their non-destructive material testing indicates high potential for catastrophic bling. So you got that going for you, which is nice? ![]() In all seriousness Souk will clean the case inside and out, all plugs pulled, piston squirters replaced, and rinse it 5 times. So he'll be fine.

Exactly the theory on the internal coating. Then I'm only going to wipe down the parts with Slick 50, then not run any oil at all. Imagine the POWAH I'll gain without any oil slushing around. |

Anyone have any more examples of vapor honing their case?

One downside of retiring is that I have lost access to the blast cabinets that were a short walk into the factory from my office. Had various mediums at my disposal but usually used glass. Lots of Kawi parts done over the years and a lot of stuff for the 911. Most of the 911 stuff, heat shields, tin, mainly external parts, got powdercoated after blasting and turned out very well.
No experience with clearing glass from internals but the shop cleaned numerous aero parts with internal passages after blast without failures. It can be done. It was a sad day when our ultrasonic cleaner with Trichlor was changed to an aqueous/citric solution. Lots more effort to degrease my stuff.

From the land of fruits and nuts:
Ground up ultra fine walnut shells are used to media blast all the surfaces of the California built B-2 bomber to help keep it stealthy clean. It doesn't harm the top secret stealth coating and is environmentally safe too.

Is the term "vapor honing" an actual process, a company name or a term created to hint that the cleaning process is related to machine honing where a predetermined amount of material is accurately prepped or evenly removed (as in cylinder honing)?
I suspect if a pressurized mix of water and glass bits are shot from a nozzle, it's a cleaning process. Sherwood |

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't "glass" basically silica, which is sand. So the process is using a sand, water, air pressure mix. Does a great job cleaning, but yes, you got to be sure all that glass/silica/sand is out or poof!

Glass beads are used in glass bead blasting. It's an effective, low abrasive media for surface cleaning. Delivery pressure can vary depending on the desired surface finish. It's not sand.
Sand blasting uses silica of varying grit size which is a much more aggressive surface cleaning media. In both cases, can affect dimensions and thus not recommended for joints or bearing surfaces. Also not recommended if blast residue can't be totally removed. Sherwood |

Vapor blasting isn't supposed to remove material or change dimensions. I used it on my motorcycle engine and wheels and the sealed bearing bore felt just as tight. It "peens" the metal slightly, so I guess there is some minute changes to the surface so I don't aim it directly at the 911 bearing seats. Proper cleaning is important but that's true for any blasting method.

We had a ultrasonic cleaner with Trichlor back in the days at Hughes Aircraft, loved that thing!!
