It looks very cool and outlaw (vomit) right now but mostly because of the color and overall raw and unfinished look. As soon as you`ll paint her - it might look completely different (rather an attitude) so... I`d try to give her a color and then played with the mirrors\bumpers

odd man out here and a noob though felt compelled to speak as one also with a "low budget" dream... definitely dig the mirror and in raw aluminum. Run driver side only and rock it, fits in perfectly with you build ethos.
What is the alternative stock big flags?

Idk hot rods are usually painted and rats are usually primer, in my head. Not really my scene tho so maybe I’m wrong.

Did you push in your bumpers?

Traditional hotrods are flat black. - Streetrods are very shiny...more like most of the modified 911s on this board. Two very different approaches.

They're clones of the 935/DP mirrors.

Visibility on the driver's side is manageable. The passenger's side would require either a new mirror glass, or the largest convex stick-on mirror I can fit on the current [useless] glass. All I can see out of the off-side is the B-pillar and the top of the right rear arch.
If I were an accomplished body guy, I could re-shape these a bit and try to manipulate the angle of the whole assembly to mitigate the limited field of view of the actual glass. But I'm not.
I'm going to send the retailer I got them from an email and see if they'll just take them back.

We'll discuss alternatives once/if I get these returned.
Wish me luck.

I think this mirror could look alright on your car in satin black. It'll pretty much blend in with the glass and look minimalist. You could grab a spray can of plasti-dip to test it out and see what you think.

Visibility? What's behind you doesn't matter.

This was my plan exactly.

Yeah, I need to be able to back this thing down my driveway...not to mention see if that cop I just passed is pulling out onto the road.

Those tiny mirrors would drive me nuts.

I would stick to either original sc mirrors. They look good for the shape of the car.

from ths view, once painted either same grey or black they'll non "pop" that much anymore and go stealth.

give it a try

Have you considered the sebring mirrors? You can mount them using the factory base and not have to fill the holes. Visibility is minimal though.

Benny,

It's on the short list of alternatives. I have narrowed the field to 3. (plus you can get them in convex lenses to widen the field of view)
But first, I need to get these 935s sent back.
Better Bodies didn't respond to me last night. They open in 2hrs 15 minutes and will be hearing from me by phone today if I don't get a reply shortly.
Once I get the return on these 935 boys underway, I'll divulge my options and we can discuss.

I sold my Fuchs today. So I'll be ordering some front end bits tonight.
I called Better Bodies and was advised that "customer service" will be calling me back. No ETA. I'm calling back today for an answer or I'm calling the credit card and filing a dispute.

I dropped in on my old shop to take the tires off the Fuchs and box them up and was given a nice surprise from some long-abandoned project that had been knocking around the shop since time out of mind.

So after shipping the wheels, I zipped home and hastily bolted the Talbot on the car.

It does not suck. Not at all. The chrome is pretty beat up and the lens has seen better days. But a real Talbot isn't something to be scoffed at over some 'personality'. I think it looks pretty badass and I can reasonably see out of it, even with the flat lens.

What does everyone think of this new development?

Great progress. I think an early rectangular flag mirror painted black (or gray) would be perfect.

You must have amazingly smooth roads around you to run that tight of tire at that low ride height. Around hear you would be scraping the front a-arms and heat exchangers at every dip driving the fun roads.

I am going back to your questions about spring rates.

The stock spring rates are really soft. 21/27 (28) is a really good combination. To make the final decision depends on the balance of the car. You have corner balance numbers? Do you have before/after numbers? Ultimately you need to use the weight loss from front or rear as a guide to add/remove spring rate from one end of the car. For example, if you dropped a bunch of weight of the front of the car its relative stiffness to spring rate (wheel load weight) will be higher. Spring rates are in force applied multiplied by distance compressed. So, lighter weight is less force applied and the relative stiffness is increased. to maintain the same balance you either take away from the front or add spring rate in the rear.

Perceived ride quality is influenced by how much travel your suspension can move. There is a fine line between firm and harsh. Firm is what you want to resist body roll. Harsh makes teeth rattle and kidneys scream for help.

First, low friction bushings (many vendors) really help reduce harshness. They allow the suspension to move freely with changes in the road. Second, proper damping with higher spring rates requires softer compression damping and slower rebound compression. You want the suspension to quickly compress easily to absorb a bump and then slowly spring back with control.

Just keep some of these thoughts in mind as you get to the point of really setting up the car. I am a believer in larger torsion bars and softer sway (anti-roll) bars. Use actual springs to support the car and sway bars to control body roll and fine-tune overall balance, turn-in, etc.

Personally, I think 23/30 would be too stiff on the street for me. Fun for a quick jaunt but hard on the body if you want to spend multiple hours pushing limits.

I have 21/28 in my car with Rebel bushings. Compliant and firm. I have Koni Sport adjustables and have set the rebound damping to match the cars weight and effective oscillation control. With proper alignment and corner balance the car is planted, stable, minimal body roll and confidence inspiring behind the wheel.

Keep having fun.

Have you spent any time tuning the engine/EFI?

Looks pretty good to me. I agree flat mirrors are hard to see out of. On my 76 the stock side mirror is not only small and flat, it also vibrates everything behind into a blur.

Hi JP,

I've seen a range of 21-22 /26-30 applied to hot rods, SCs, and Carreras seemingly indiscriminately, which I know is not right for the reasons you point out. Do you mind sharing (re-sharing?) the weight of your car?

Any idea the right tb setup for street-driven cars at the lighter end of the spectrum, 2100-2400 lbs?

The Talbot are, imho, the correct mirrors for this car.
