FS: Carbon/Kevlar Protection Plate 1974-1989

This is a carbon/kevlar replica of a factory protection plate part #91134116105. It is constructed from a single layer of carbon and several layers (between 3 and 8 depending on location) of carbon Kevlar. There is a single layer of 2mm honeycomb resin matrix core.

The part is vacuum resin infused and post cured in a computer controlled oven for 16 hours to ensure the greatest possible mechanical strength.

It is less than a quarter of the weight of a steel panel and is impressively stiff and strong.

I was just looking at the plate on my 1989 that needs to be restored, or replaced, anyway.

I'm interested. Curious as to your thoughts on how it'll hold up to regular use. Obviously, metal will bend where this will break, but how big of an impact will cause structural damage?

Also, did you consider metal inserts for the hardware mounting points? That may be cost prohibitive and perhaps the CF will be ok in compression under the bolt & washer?

Hi Frank! If that's your "Vents" project, it's an ideal candidate for this part! (EDIT - Read your signature, duh.)

I am 100% certain that once you see and feel this part in your hands you will understand that it has been designed as a protection plate, and is not just a thin plastic replica of one.

Page 3 of my latest build thread does detail some of the design evolution. My first efforts, although much lighter, weren't something I'd put on my own car, or offer to others... I'm particular in that regard.

It's PLENTY strong. I re-made and revised the layup several times and I have absolutely no reservations about its fitness for the purpose. It will absorb a lot of energy and abuse without bending OR breaking. I've gone as far as hitting it with a 4 pound sledgehammer which bounced off. I've also stepped on it trying to break it without success. Neither test is very scientific I'm afraid

Metal inserts would be possible but sooner or later the force needs to transfer to the composite part so little advantage. The compressive strength of the composite structure is more than capable of handling the loads imparted.

Production versions of the part will include a layer of non-conductive reinforcement on each side of the mounting locations to mitigate galvanic corrosion.

I wanted to note, perhaps there was concern over the ability of the composite material to withstand the torque of the M10 fasteners, but I did torque all 4 fasteners to 35 ft/lbs and there really is no issue with this, they pull up to torque just as well as you would expect (perhaps better!) than the steel plate.

Also I risked life and limb to shoot some strength demos... if you're unconvinced of the durability of the skid plate these might change your mind. Sorry for the poor quality! Some good comedy, though...

Thanks! It looks great and feels great in the hand, too. I'm certain you'd be impressed.

The mounting points are reinforced with extra layers of cloth, in particular the rear mounts, which are often bent or distorted on the factory steel plates. In addition to the added thickness, the carbon replica is slightly larger in overall dimensions to make the mounting points at the rear more sturdy with a much greater cross sectional area.

There are a total of 9 layers of reinforcement at the rear mounting points, which gives a nominal thickness of 2.7mm, and 6 layers at the other two points (the recessed ones) which gives a nominal thickness of 1.8mm.

The original thickness of the steel protection plate is 1.2mm.
