1973 RS 2.7 RS/RSR 2.8 Ducktail for sale
1973 RS 2.7 RS/RSR 2.8 Ducktail for sale.
I have the original 1973 RS/RSR duck tail for sale with full history + VIN and pictures of the car that came off, VIN I will share them with the buyer It is renovated and ready to be painted, The original cable harness and orginal Hella registration plate are included, and frame steel and no rust were found when the paint was removed PM for pictures. Price 12,911 USD + shipping and pay/pal fees, or bank wire is maybe a cheaper solution ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Porsche's iconic "Ducktail" spoiler, used on the 911 Carrera RS, is a classic feature with specific variations between the 1973 and 1974 model years: 1973 Ducktail Frame Material: Available in both alloy (aluminum) and steel frames. The aluminum frames were mainly for earlier cars, while steel frames were more widely used. License Plate Light Cutouts: All 1973 Ducktails include cutouts for license plate lights. Drain Holes: Located on both the left and right edges to prevent water accumulation. Hood Latch Bar: Alloy Frames: Use a straight hood latch bar and curved hood latch bar. Steel Frames: Feature a curved hood latch bar. Alloy-frame ducktails are even more rare and highly sought-after and very few have bean sold as most RS cars used the steel 1974 Ducktail Frame Material: Only steel frames were used in 1974, with no alloy option. License Plate Light Cutouts: Most 1974 Ducktails do not have the license plate lights in the trailing edge. However, some early 1974 models had cutouts, likely a leftover design from the 1973 model. Small block-off plates were added to cover these cutouts on some early 1974 cars. Drain Holes: Present on both edges, similar to the 1973 version. Material Variants Fiberglass: Both 1973 and 1974 models had fiberglass mat and ruff surface in the earlier versions used a vintage fiberglass mat. The later New-old-stock (NOS) parts used a finer filament glass mat, giving them a slightly different appearance and finish. Manufacturer Brixner of Stuttgart: Brixner, a pioneering plastic manufacturer, produced these Ducktails for Porsche, building on a relationship that began with the production of bumpers and bodywork for Porsche in the 1960s. These variations in materials, structural details, and design features make each year's Ducktail unique and valuable to enthusiasts and restorers looking to maintain authenticity in classic Porsche 911 models. BAT is tempting for its wide audience, but the no-reserve policy for parts can make it a bit risky, especially with a high-value or niche item. Selling directly to someone who needs it for a period-correct, no rush to sell, keeping it within the enthusiast community or matching it with a proper model like a '73 RS/RSR or a '74-'76 Carrera RoW (or even a U.S.-spec '74-'75 Carrera) and as long member of Pelican it sholud be nice to find the right buyer who appreciates the part's significance and is willing to pay what it's worth.

Question for the experts- when these tails left the factory, was the glass folded over the lid creating a lip on the back side?
Did the process change at a certain time of manufacture for a smooth underside finish? GLWS, and thank you for the guidance |

Glass fiber was often folded over steel or aluminum frames, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Many of the steel frames developed rust over the years, particularly in areas exposed to moisture or salt. Aluminum frames, while resistant to rust, were often weaker and less durable under the stress of racing conditions. This variability in material performance highlights the importance of sourcing and preserving original components. For example, many 3.0 Turbo tails are known to rust quickly, as they were supplied by various manufacturers to Porsche, resulting in inconsistent quality.
Brixner of Stuttgart was a pioneer in producing fiberglass parts for Porsche. However, Porsche also relied on multiple suppliers, leading to differences in the design and construction of these parts. This particular Ducktail, which we are selling, has an intriguing history. It has been on the shelf since 1977-78, as I recall from when the car it belonged to transitioned out of racing and was modified into a different type of race car. This provenance not only underscores its authenticity but also adds a layer of historical significance for collectors or restorers seeking a period-correct part. |
