Clint from Rebel Racing said that you buy the "kit" consisting of case, crank, fan shroud, and a few other bits. Then you have to get the other 911 parts. You mill down the cam carriers and plug some oil galley, cut down the valve covers, then open up the oil pump and cut it down some, then you have to put everything together and get it running with the induction of your choice. It is more like being an engine manufacturer rather than just rebuilding a 911 engine.

How to get POLO stuff
Go to Advance Performance Engineering, Inc. - Home
By the way that engine and those pictures from the 70's are very cool. Please realize Dean is busy. Please respect his time. If you just want to talk shop this is the place to do it. Last edited by cmpski; 08-16-2011 at 12:54 PM.. |

I know of someone with a Speedster with a early Polo motor in it, very cool.
expect a feature in Excellence soon. I was raised that to ask the cost of something was not polite, but its killing me.... How much... and don't tell my Mom

If you have to ask.....you can't afford it.
I've seen numbers around $30K. |

I would tell you to go to Dean's website call him and talk specs. Price can vary. If you want engine management call Richard Clewett or whomever your perfered electronic management person might be. Craig Smith in Morro Bay builds Dean's kits and I think John Benton in LA would love to build one for you. Dean knows them both. I've spent 100's if not over a 1000 hours in the last 2 years doing research and hunting for parts. Just one gear for my transmission was on my shopping list for 4 months and I found it down under.
Almost every area of this car is custom, built to have the look of the time it was built. Engine oil tank to front oil cooler lines are elephant racing because they look vintage. If you haven't watched the utube video I would recommend you do it. It's at the top of the thread. Last edited by cmpski; 08-17-2011 at 02:02 PM.. Reason: spelling |

Following this thread with great enthusiasm! I am quite a fan of Dean's engines. I can't afford one, but I can't afford to buy a Degas either. Doesn't stop me from knowing exactly where I would spend the lottery money - LOL!
The first time I saw a POLO engine was at Emory's - Parts Obsolete Campout. It was in one of their little outlaw race cars. Instantly enamored, especially when they told me how hard you can push them and they prove to be basically indistructable. There is something greatly compelling about a piece of machinery that is both powerful, beautiful, and insanely durable. angela

Awesome piece of machinery!
If it had to make sense, none of us would drive a Porsche...

I have been in love with the polo motor since I first read about them in excellence.
Sure it's more money but the cool factor is off the chart - well done. 912s with a flat six in them aren't at all the same thing as this build. Very, Very nice. |

992?
Porsche is working on new twin turbo 4-cylinder engines up to 360HP. Here's one article:
Honoring Heritage: New Porsche Flat-Four Displaces 2.5 Liters, Makes 360 HP - Rumor Central The article says in part "And can we imagine a 911 with a four-cylinder mounted on and behind the rear axle? Answer: As much as we can see sport sedans, SUVs, and mid-engined roadsters wearing the Porsche crest. Don’t expect a complete drubbing of the famous high-output 911 flat-sixes though." The U.S. is mandating 35.5 MPG fuel economy for new cars by 2016. BMW already has a TT4 for sale, but it's not a boxer. So how about a 992 with the 4-cylinder boxer?

The first one was Dean Polopolos' creation. He took a 911 case and milled out the two middle spigots and welded it back together, then had a crankshaft made or modified which ended up with a weird firing order. Also the custom shroud and cut cams, etc. A real hack job.
Now he has his own bespoke case crankshaft and cams made with proper boxer type firing order but still using the 911 topend components. You know how the 908 engine is basically an 8 cylinder 911 engine? Well, this is a 4 cylinder 911 engine.

where is that hack job
Flieger
the 'hack job' you mention what ever became of it? Was it also a collaboration between Mr Polopolus, Beck and some others? What some people also do not realise was Porsche for a short time in the 60's considered making a prod 911/4. Now with the advent of the new generation 4 cyl tt would be interesting to compare how its architecture stacks up against dare I say it Subaru...but i digress. An observation - is the polo engine cost which is strato cumulus viewed as such because it is a 4cyl and in this iteration for a 912? Does only building a six justify this kind of outlay? 4 cyl, uber light weight in comparison, impressive hp ticks. my boxes (not my partners)...only 750 dozen more lamingtons too sell |
